The interesting thing about this remarkably ugly weapon is that its just a deformed looking G36.

Speculation in that they had to make it look different to justify the amounts spent on R&D.

Why are they not going Bullpup? Seems like the logical way to go...it looks like an M4 with a plastic cover..

Especially interesting since they gave length as one of the big problems with the M-16

It's a dressed-up G36. Is the M16 that bad that they have to replace it?

"When the weapon is fired gases travel back down the tube into the chamber and pushes the bolt back to eject the shell casing and chamber a new round.

The XM8's gas system instead is connected to a mechanical operating rod, which pushes back the bolt to eject the casing and chamber a new round each time the weapon is fired."

My memories of the FN FAL are that the gas hit the gas piston rod which pushed back on the bolt and ejected the casing. Are they really talking about new technology here?

Not at all. Amazing how they can dress the spiel up for the papers isnt it

The plan eventually is to move over to a new 6.8x43 calibre. The 5.56 will be kept in the interim.

I thought Caseless ammo was the new thing..and those 20mm Grenade launchers..
Also Dont all H&K designs favout the Delayed blowback with the roller locking? Less maintenance than the gas operation.

The XM8 is the gun-part of the OICW project. The 20mm bit was going to be delayed and expensive, so theyre running with the easy bit first.

The M16 can't be that much of a problem if many other countries use it. Performance must set against cost - does this new weapon offer enough of an improvement of the M16 to warrant the billions spent on it?

Is it time for an M16A3? M16's can be converted to use a piston rod. Check these out:

Both of these are conversions by a company called ZM weapons. One of the bonuses is that the M16 can now have a folding stock. Seems like a better idea than a new rifle.

There are some M16A3s already in service with selected US units AFAIK

According to the interweb, there is am M16A3 & A4. The M16A3 has a flat top with picatinny rail and a full-auto capability, the A4 has a flat top & rail but no full-auto.

So I should have said M16A5.

Im sure the A5 will find a bigger audience than the XM8 in the short term at least.
