I think that any sort of military tradition or heraldry is in effect folklore, passed down through the units. I seriously doubt that the uniform regulations say why anything is as it is, just that it is.
Glengarrys have their origins in the Scottish headress...while they may be dissimilar in other ways the ribbon is the common denominator.
The Michael Collins thing is pure myth as the army at the time was not broken down into the different corps.
The infantry officers Glengarry is a different animal to the cavalry version as is the cavalry officers version.....the infantry officers were issued the glengarry to set them aside from PDF officers.....as with the omission of the Sam Browne belt on the scale of issue.
