  • After cadets

I see from another thread (poll) that there are a number of officers on the board - can any of you tell me where I would stand doing a cadetship already holding a degree?
When(IF) I get commissioned, where do I stand in relation to pay etc? Would it be the same as the cadet going to college, or the DE who came in with a degree?
Does anyone have information on pensions/length of service/length of commission?
Can you loose your job or is it till retirerment?
If you go oversees what is the compensation like?
Or have you any information that I may find useful before I give up everything to do the cadetship.....
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you. It sounds as if you have no member of your immediate family who is or has previously served as an officer or a politician. If either were the case you would not need to ask those questions here. Of course, there is the possibility that you may be on your county GAA team and if that is the case you probably don't really need to know the answers to your questions either. What I'm trying to say is that with thousands of applicants and 25 positions yearly, you either have a pre-arranged vacancy or no chance. Do you know much about horses by chance?? What about engineering or computers?? Step 1: Go help Fianna Fail. Step 2: Go help them some more. Step 3: Repeat steps 1 & 2. This should give your first born son an excellent shot at a job with An Garda Siochana. Your next son should become a priest. Your third son a teacher and then your daughter may get to the second interview for the cadets.

I already have a cert in computing and hopefully I'll have a degree in a year and a bit but if I do go for the cadets I wouldn't want to be stuck doing IT stuff. Would this cause many problems.

I just contacted them about applying as a cadet, although i have the qualifications (degree in IT) but I am over the age limit (im 27 NOW damnit). i thought id chance my arm anyway.

The recruiter told me to call back after 2pm and ask about direct entries.... so im going to, ill let you know what happens, I believe they file you away incase they need you, do you reckon saying im currently being enrolled in RDF will help at all??

F*ck youd think theyd make an exception for being 27... i reckon id be fitter than most guys younger than me, and im not exactly retarded (altho some of my comments on this board may lead to some raised eyebrows on that last statement :D)

If all this fails, its time to save the queen.:-patriot:

It's not really an IT degree. A lot of the stuff is more geared towards industrial systems and a bit of programming for systems like cars.

So what type of skills exactly would it help me to have?
