For those not familiar with the area, its about 6 acres on the side of a hill with a 3 story building and a few nissin huts. it stands about 500m from the site of a proposed leisure development, planning for which was not approved.
There is nothing in cobh at the moment...at all..adding a few community housing projects and a community centre will do little to solve this areas problems...however in my opinion, building a part of this leisure development on this site would provide some employment to this black spot. I have seen former government buildings handed over to the local community in the past, most of them fall into disrepair after an initial burst of enthusaism.
Sell the place...to the highest bidder, with the best plan, and pump the takings back to defence, leave the local council sort out their own problems, the days of free handouts from the government are Gone.
Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

Danny Crowley is obviously an optimist. Whats the problem since the RDF aren't being evicted.
On a similar vein the principal of the local Gaelscoil in Clonmel was complaining about the condition of the place and Noel Davern TD suggested they move into Kickham Bks.
They haven't complained since. :Dsigpic

So were and when are the Ack Ack moving? If I remember rightly, the gunnery training bay in Haulbowline has simulators for the Bofors 40mm L70,which would be similar to the new guns used by the AD regiment. However would it not make more sense to move the Slua Muiri out of Collins Barracks to Haulbowline, home of the NS,and move Ack Ack to Cork, where their equipment is currently stored?
The NS recently went to a lot of trouble to eradicate Honkeys from the island,I believe even those who were PAs are now members of the Naval Service......no sooner have they succeeded, a bunch of sandbags arrive..Fail to prepare....prepare to FAIL!
