  • Death of a thousand cuts continues so
"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

How long was Clancy Idle before they redeveloped it? Same with Kildare? What about all the old slua halls around the place that have been idle since after the first RDF reorg in 2005 or thereabouts?
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

        • If the land has been sold to a developer that’s the developer’s business

If has been transferred to a council that is a different matter

There is at least one RDF property on that list that I’m aware of, sold in 2015, where building has started

The greens might have forgotten about this little issue. Doubt any of these "overholders" will give up thier golden geese so easy

Saw pictures recently of the barracks - it is actually starting to fall apart, becoming overgrown and decrepit.

                  • The old Sluagh hall in Midleton has a "sale agreed" on it for quite some time now. They only removed the "34 Inf Bn" sign relatively recently.

Strangely the new accommodation has its own problems.

Lads going into their rooms after work; playing PlayStations and drinking, alone.

Lovely rooms but it doesn't help the social dynamics of Army life.

When they were in four Man rooms they had people to craic and banter with.

The government again waiting until it's too late.

instead of selling the land for private development in order to fund the defence forces, it is now forced into the only choice (and most costly to the taxpayer) it has due to the crisis they created.

Instead of getting €90 million for Cathal Brigham from private investment and 1000 apartments built , the government will now have to spend multiples of this figure and get less built in more time.
