    Big difference.
Could be changed with the stroke of a pen…. A lot cheaper than setting up a whole new HQ

Funniest thing I've seen on this site in years.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

What regulation/Adm Instr says that ?

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"

          Funny and true!

Massive improvements could be made across the DF at zero cost with changes to the Defence Acts, DFRs, Admin/Logs Instructions, paperwork etc

Many would solve serious frustrations for people

may not put a extra cent in someone’s pocket but make life a bit easier

we don’t need a joint HQ we already have one, the problem is it isn’t joint enough

the sale of Mitchell Barracks in County Mayo concluded in 2021 for €600,000.

As set out in the White Paper on Defence, the Government has decided that 100% of receipts from property disposals are to be reinvested in the defence capital programme and necessary adjustments made in financial provisions.

Yup. Sold for buttons. A new build semi-d (both units) would fetch more than that.

I thought that the local RDF unit (D Coy 6 Bn?) are billeted back in a corner of the same location?

Nothing on Mayo CoCo planning website ... yet

Have a look at Admin Instruction CS4 DFHQ establishment and have a read of the footnotes at the top of the page regarding AC/NS appointments.

There's 5 DFHQ appointments for the AC for example for Captain/Comdt rank.

If the Air Corps wants someone in there, they have to sacrifice that person with potentially no replacement doing their existing job in Baldonnel.

In lay man's terms, if the total establishment of the AC for Capt/Comdt is 60, and you want to staff the 5 DFHQ appointments aswell, you now have 65 appointments but can never have more than 60 capt/comdts.

In the Army this isn't the case.

Clever accounting by the green uniforms as always.

Watch out for more of it when it comes to implementation of the CoDF memo. Anything that seeks to reduce the green influence or threaten cushy appointments in Brussels, OSCE, UNNY etc will be fiercely resisted.

                      • There are Navy serving in Brussels/Shape but their appointments at home are vacant. Not so for the Army as there is an Army only Col panel in CS4 for overseas appointments.

                        • Im straying off topic so apologies but ill make one prediction for the future.

Given the amount of attention that surrounded the discussion of Primary Radar and its stragetic importance for national defence and how it should feed into a RAP for the Defence Forces.

Watch this space. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the Army suddenly decide they want to be responsible for it.

Granted, there are many facets to that discussion but I think any reasonable individual would argue that Primary Radar would be responsibility of a Nations air arm. If they don't make this magical switch to an "Air Force" the Army will swallow it up. Arty lads aren't up to much, I'm sure they wouldn't mind a plethora of new SNCO/officer appts to get promoted into!

                          • It has to be said the Artillery folks took a firm hold of the drones from the outset, even though, as a recce asset, it would have made more sense for them to be a Cav thing.
I'm willing to predict that the primary radar military aspect will be civvies, under token military management, same as in NS FMC.

                            • Engineer Corps have drones too and the plan is for Cav to have some in the future.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

Wasn't that a sort of copy from the British Army, where their medium/large UAVs (Watchkeeper/Desert Hawk) were used mainly by the Royal Artillery, with the RAF later entering the UAV business using Reapers.

As for barrack closures, I wouldn't be surprised if certain people try to use that AI report on Ukraine to argue for all DF Barracks in Urban areas to close and be given over for Housing.
It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.
