Sig and Haenel have also submitted offers. The LMT offer won't be the L129 as it uses the inferior direct impingement system and not a gas piston, it's also semi-auto only and not select fire.

No. Not every sniper is trained on the FN SR as it's another course so for the competition the spotter had the option of using the FN or Steyr fitted with an S&B sight.

Not gone but the FN can't seem to hold a zero well enough to be able to do the job well enough. The Steyr or a AI in 7.62 is preferred for the spotter role.

Was always a problem when the back half of the weapon is not connected directly to the barrel, instead attached to a metal plate, and the sight sits on a Picatinny rail attached to this metal cover, which slides into a groove at the rear half of the weapon. If we are talking tolerances here, that is already too many variables. If the Rail was bolted to the Receiver directly, there may be some chance.
Its a manufactured weakness.
Look at the difference in the Steyr. The barrel locks in place, the Receiver, holding the rail onto which your sights are mounted, is attached directly to the barrel, locking into position.
Zeroing the FAL back in the day, at 100m, with the best of shiney Plastic Butt FAL, you were still hoping to manage to get your grouping inside a 4x3 white patch. Once we went to the Steyr, suddenly groupings for zeroing by experienced shooters was within a circle an old IR£1 coin could cover. Less sloppiness.
