  • Combat infantry course

Should the RDF introduce a combat infantryman's test for 3*s with a fitness standard that requires some dedication (while not exactly eclipsing your non military life) and some realistic tests of battle readiness.
    Day 1
Say a fitness test consisting of
2 mile run in less than 14 minutes
44 press ups in two minutes or less
    50 sit ups " "
    5 Heaves
400m swim in DPMs to be completed in any time (hang on might have to recalulate that, that would be 20 lengths of a 20metre pool wouldnt it?)
2mins tread water in CEFO w rifle

    Day 2
Then an infantry test consisting of
8 miles forced march in CEMO in under 2hrs.
    Section in attack test
Stalking test or Camo and concealment test

    Day 3
    Reintroduction to fieldcraft
    platoon in attack exercises
CASEVAC (under fire, 4kms w stretcher case no time)
    Platoon in defence

    Day 4
    Adventurous training
    Assault course
    Debrief and feedback

To my mind this would demonstrate a far higher degree of competency among reservists and give ptes something else to work towards rather than a pots cse.
It could be administered on the basis of a course of instruction with a recognised qualification that might even be worn in badge form.
Apart from being fun it would significantly thin the butlins crowd and greatly reduce the waste of training expenses through people flaking on career courses.

Not a bad idea that one, make it a full week rather than the 4 days.

IT's should be required for all 3* and above going on courses. Everything else should be part of a unit's regular training and shouldnt need to be tested individually. If the training offr and NCO's are doing their job right they will know who knows their stuff. And as joint exercises with the PDF become more common, standards all round should increase.

although the tactics courses which have been run were worthwhile - really drilling in the basics of fieldcraft, weapons skills and section in attack drills. I still think every training week should be run like that, but that depends on having enough 3*s and good training NCO's.

400m is a bit extreme for the swim. The dept of marine dont even require that for those who work at sea, plus you must consider the amountof people for whatever reason cannot swim, through no fault of their own. Who will train them and where and when?

That said it would be a start if all were at least brought to army fitness standards.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

Scrap the swimming part of it , tie them to a log and make them run for 1.5 miles at break neck speed instead.

there is a similar event for US army Infantrymen the expert infantry badge. You must conduct a 12 mile road march with weapon Ruck LCE and helmet within 3hours,complete(and pass) a land nav test, shoot expert and score 270 or higher on the Physical Fitness test to be eligable to try at testing- a 3 day affair which includes salute reports;operating the ASCEP radio; dissasembly reasembly of the M-240, M-249, m-4 and M-9; call for fire; first aid; estimate distance;NBC;camoflauge and lots more fun stuff.

The successful soldier not only is awarded the EIB for wear on any uniform(BDUs or dress) but more importantly is exempt from testing for the rest of his career:D

I think the swimming test is tough but doable, the fact that some people might need to learn to swim shouldnt be regarded as a bad thing.
Unless theres a medical reason which would most likely exclude them from service anyway.
The beauty of a four day course is that it might just be squeezed into a bank holiday weekend.
Please understand that Im not talking about a compulsory test like an IT, this is meant to be a demonstration of individual proficiency and commitment which would aid progression in the reserves but not be mandatory.

I think its a great idea. a way to sort out the people who take the reserves seriously...but what are the odds of someone making it happen?

The fitness requirements mentioned are higher than is required for PDF.

Get the basic training system in place first, then worry about the advanced course.
Take these men and women for your example.

Anything that improves proficency in tactics is a good thing. Realistically, thats where most RDF units have problems.

Since when did the PDF get two minutes?

Tactical training is important but in the current circumstances unreasonable difficult to organise, what courses like this would achieve is a reprofiling of reserve infantry units that would mean the people selected for courses and exercises aren't likely to decide its too hard and leave with their valuable experience.
