Minister announces €21m for Defence Forces building work

Major capital construction projects worth €21million for the Defence Forces will being with year, the Minister for Defence, Mr Smith, has announced.

Among the 21 projects approved are the refurbishment of the brigade block, Custume barracks, Athlone; the Armoury, Dún Uí Mhaolíosa, Galway; battalion headquarters, Dundalk Barracks; and accommodation at Cathal Brugha Barracks.

Others include the upgrade of the accommodation at Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, and at Dún Uí Mhaolíosa, Galway, and of the accommodation and cook-house at Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick.

There will also be new officers and stores for the Army Ranger at the Curragh.

The Minister said “I am delighted to approve these capital projects which will further improve facilities for the Defence Forces.

“These contracts are further evidence of my commitment to implement the modernisation programme as set out in the White Paper on Defence.”

He said that since 1997, over €175 million has been spent on modernising Defence Forces infrastructure and facilities throughout the country

The Minister for Defence, Mr. Michael Smith, T.D. is pleased to announce that his Department has placed three construction contracts with a total overall value, including consultancy, design and other project services, of €3.7 million approx.

Details of the individual contracts, all of which were placed following a competitive tender process, are as follows:-

· The refurbishment and extension of Q Block, Cathal Brugha Barracks, Rathmines at a cost of €1.4 million. The work will involve the refurbishment of existing buildings to provide a new battalion headquarters. The existing headquarters building will be transformed into an accommodation block, next year. The contract for the new headquarters was placed with M.D.Y. Construction Ltd., Naas, and the project is expected to take 36 weeks to complete.

· The refurbishment of C Block, Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel. The completed project will provide modern accommodation for 36 personnel and locker room facilities for 100 personnel and will cost €1.3 million. The contract was placed with Fintan Phelan Construction Ltd., Carlow, and the project is expected to take 30 weeks to complete.

· The upgrading of Block P, Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick at a cost of €1 million. This project involves the refurbishment and conversion of a three storey building to prove 5 single bedrooms, 11 four-man bedrooms, and associated works. The contract was placed with Kylemore Construction Co. Ltd., Limerick, and the work is expected to take 6 months to complete.

Minister Smith said "I am delighted to announce these new contracts which will further improve the accommodation and office facilities for Defence Forces personnel. Since 1997 in excess of €170 million has been invested in infrastructure and facilities throughout the country and it is essential that the implementation of the modernisation programme continues over the coming years".

The Minister for Defence Mr. Willie O'Dea, T.D., is pleased to announce the placing of a contract for the refurbishment of the Old Hospital Block at Custume Barracks, Athlone.

The refurbishment work for this building, which contains accommodation units, a dental surgery and offices will involve the fire compartmentalisation of the building, the provision of a fire escape, and the installation of fire alarms. It will also involve redecoration, an upgrading of ablution areas, an upgrading of the heating system, emergency lighting, and rewiring.


The main contract has been placed with Shine Construction Ltd., Athlone, and it is expected that the project will be completed within 24 weeks. The total overall value of the contract, which was placed following a competitive tender process is €730,000, including consultancy, design and other project services.


Minister O'Dea stated: "I am delighted to announce this new contract which will further improve the facilities in Custume Barracks. This refurbishment work will ensure that the Old Hospital Block will be a safe, modern and comfortable place of work for Defence Forces personnel. This is a further step in the Defence Forces infrastructural modernisation programme and I will be working hard to ensure the continuation of this process over the coming years"
