  • DF Medical Insurance?

Does the defence forces not have a medical insurance scheme similar to the Garda Medical aid?
Is there an opening for this?
For those who are unaware, the Garda medical aid is like the medical card,VHI and BUPA all rolled into one..and still better, with a deduction from your weekly wage of about e10.
I got all my teeth done on it :D

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

Apart from having VHI or BUPA deducted from your pay I am not aware of any other health insurance scheme in the PDF. Is there a need for such a scheme I don't know, during my time in the PDF I never needed to see a doctor apart from annual or overseas medical exam. Dental treatment I found to be basic extractions or fillings were no problem but at one stage at a dentist appointment in Bricins I was told that one of my front teeth needed to come out as it needed a crown and this was not an option in Bricins. The dentist said I had 2 choices extraction and and a false tooth tooth in Bricins or see a civvy dentist and pay for a crown. I chose the latter option and paid. I retired from the PDF in 1999 so things re medical schemes may have changed but I doubt it.

PDFORRA & RACO offer some schemes:

PDFORRA offers Group Serious Illness Cover Plan which gives you a lump sum in the event of serious illness.

PDFORRA also offers "SLANU", a personal accident protection plan, covering you at home/overseas, on & off duty.

Well they tried but it didn't work because some people objected to paying for it.

Its a voluntary scheme isn't it?, only available to PDFORRA members ?, so therefore it's optional.
