  • Cheap Labour

The director reserve wants to amass a skills profile of RDF members.....is what I was told when I questioned why I had to submit a civilian skills form to my unit...

    naturally I refused.

If the minister wants skilled tradesmen let him train them. I joined the reserve to get away from my civilian occuptation and not get button holed when we are integrated.

If the army wants skilled people let him pay the going rates Lets face it we owe the department of defence no favours. I give up my annual holidays and train outside of normal working hours at considerable personnal finnacial loss...but its what I do for a hobby so I give my time freely. Now they want me to do a similar role to my day time employment for less money...I don't think so!

The army is being reduced and they want to use the RDF as cheap labour to fill in the gaps.

At no time have the DF compensated me for time lost at my civilian employment and never has any understanding been shown toward the civilian employers who employ reservists. the self employed are at an even greater loss and the have no thanks either.

I feel that RDF members should look deeply into conforming to any further moves toward integration before commiting them selves to what is to be a very precarious temporary employment contract. What are the guarantees toward our future welfare in the event of an injury sustained or even worse a death while serving on secondment. The minister is unlikely to pick up the tab for what is in effect a short term contract.

Yes integration should be phased in and the reserve needs to reorganised but not at the loss of the rights of its members nor the undermining of already serving soldiers etc.

I think it should be pointed out that the skills forms currently doing the rounds are a Voluntary thing. All you need to put in them is your name,Unit,Rank and Number. Anything other than this you wish to enter on the form you do so of your own will.

It is not as some people have accused me,Mutiny to not complete this form.

I did not join the RDF to be a Policeman. If I did I would have Joined a PA unit, and have been offered a Comission immediately, given my experience.

    I didnt,and wasn't.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

I wouldnt lose too much sleep over it, doubt anything will come of it anyway. And even if it does if there are people happy to give there skills, let them, if not, they cant force you. So everyones happy

I take your point hptmurphy, you are right about the DOD taking advantage of "cheap labour".

But alot of people have been fighting for a long time to get recognision for the skills they possess, if they go on to occupy vacancy they are qualified to fill, these positions attract tech pay.

I addition the first RDF personnel to go overseas will proberly be those with professional qualifications.

If they don't have my name and adress at this stage...well I'm concerned to say the least!

The point I am trying to make is that this is being thrust upon us with no reward. If the DF want to make avail of our skills we should be paid...not just expected!

Bad enough we give of our free time without recompense..seeing as most other army reserves are paid a quraterly retainer....we are been screwed!

I would at least expect tech pay. But there is still no way I'm becoming a traffic cone.

I am using the form to try and get those skills I want the army to recognise. I did not mention my civilian qualifications except the parachute experience and the PT qualification. I still don't expect anything to come of it but what the hell.

Yes he was recruited from the RDF and specifically given a commision because of his special skills, and also because of current law.

He is therefore a temporary (for the duration of the comission) member of the PDF. As we know, legally RDF personnel can't serve overseas.

Also there is no provision for transfer from PDF to RDF, they have to enlist or be commissioned as a member of the PDF.

All personnel that join the PDF (on Short Service Commission or not) have to be discharged, if they are other ranks, or resign their commission ,if they are officers.

So if he wants to rejoin the RDF, when he finishes the Short Service Commission, he will have to start from scratch.

But the point is he was recruited out of the RDF and into the PDF because of his civvy skills. Therefore cheap labour.

The DF has always been seen as a cheap source of labour - maintanance of essential services, DF has been called on to provide:

Cash escorts for very small fees
                        ambulance cover
                        refuse collection
                        provide bus services
                        fight forest fires
search and rescue (ie locally on the ground)
                        etc

                              F****** bank scum

Those bastards who own the banks are making plenty of money and then when it comes to cash escort they expect the DF to do it on the cheap and that prick of a minister wont make them pay up.
they shoul have to pay full price + a bit extra.
I know the army has to guard it because with that much money it presents a danger to the public but its the banks who have put this danger out there so they should have to pay the price.
honestly can anyone disagree that they should.
