1st gen is roughly equivalent to watching black and white telly with the aerial knocked out of alignment, in green.

Yeah iv used it. Poxy field of view and about as much contrast as polar bear in a snow storm. I presume there is a scale of utter shit 1st geb gear to not so bad 1st geb gear though?

The best discription of 1st gen was one I heard from a Falklands vet.
"In total darkness you look into it and see a load of green snow..then some light green snow appears. Thats either a tank or a deer."

While you're at it. buy a giant sign with luminous letters saying "DUMBASS GRUNTS RIPE FOR THE SLAUGHTER RIGHT HERE"

The point is to be able to observe without making your location obvious to everyone within a mile

you have obviously never used 1 gen night vision equipment , the regimental marching band could pass by your position at ten yards and you wouldnt be able too see them at least with "DUMBASS GRUNTS RIPE FOR THE SLAUGHTER RIGHT HERE" luminous sign the light id get off it might enable me too see them

Or one might choose to live until the morning then kill the enemy in daylight rather than creating a situation where everyone within 10km can see you.
