With the RDF, there are a lot of variables:

      time of year you join
      unit planning
      sufficient numbers to do activities
ability to go on field days/weekends/camps/courses
vacancies in NCO / officer ranks
      passing tests
      being recommended for promotion
      experience
      standard of training received

      ... not an endless list

On average a member of the RDF can expect to be a 2* within a year of enlistment and a 3* within 2 years of enlistment. After that, as I have said it depends, but if there is a place available and you are suitable expect to be on a Pot NCOs Course after 3/4 years service.

I believe I know this individual as well Goldie...that is very quick for this person to reach NCO. In general in the reserves is obtaining NCO's based on experience or vacancies? or a little bit of both?

The joining instructions for the East usually state 1 year as Tech 2* / Line 3*, but there have been people on the course with less than 1.5 years service in the RDF.

From the time of joining up, how long would you be in before you went on UN duty?

Nepotism, a subject covered amongst others at:
                              http://www.irishmilitaryonline.com/b...light=nepotism

Leave nepotism as a seperate entity and use ability and competence as benchmarks, which I believe Itchy was referring to.
