The word "hearsay" is the first thing that comes to mind. Its a pity we don't have people from the tabloid media reading this. Maybe if we did one of them could investigate it further

I would go one further and say that it is complete bullshit. 32 men refusing to obey an order is a mutiny! It is not a reason to return anybody to their unit....it is a reason to court-martial the lot of them. I would say that the story is a lie!! However, it is quite common for people to be sent back from overseas training to their units for many different reasons such as injury, failing the medical, not being fit enough or the person simply requests to be sent back. That type of thing happens all the time and that is why many people get overseas trips at the last moment as substitutes and end up filling a different role to their normal employment such as a driver going as a rifleman or a signalman going as a rifleman or a Cpl going as a Sgt etc. It could quite easily happen that an exercise was called and somebody decided that they had enough of the physical stuff and requested to be returned to their unit. That happens a lot and the army would rather lose the bodies in training than in a real life situation. Nothing strange here at all. Sometimes training is hard and people who are used to having a nice cushy job can find the rigours of infantry life a little difficult when they haven't done it in many years so they decide not to bother going overseas in the middle of the training.Comment

One of the (many) Defence Act reforms should be a seriously huge widening of the grounds for dismissal from the DF. For taking the piss, for a start.Take these men and women for your example.

AFAIK anyone signing up in the last few years can be sent over seas (ie ordered to go, not volunteer to go). So it all depends which contract you signed.Comment

If you signed a 5 year contract (since around 1994), you have to serve overseas.Comment
