Since 1958, the Defence Forces have a continuous presence on peace support operations, mainly in the Middle East. However, in recent years, following the end of the cold war, Defence Forces personnel have also found themselves in many other parts of the globe as peace-keepers.

3 Brigadier Generals overseas, 1 with UNMIL FHQ, 1 with EUMS (whatever that is) and 1 with ESDP/PfP. Which would make 13

I can't think of any officer remotely capable of fighting a battle. Leave it to the NCOs.

Just came across this thread, actually the answer is none - General is the rank above Lt General, the highest rank in the DF is Lt General. Although the DF did have "full" Generals in the past.

At least we do not have 49 admirals for 48 ships like a Navy not that far away from Ireland does.

When was the last Full General's Position held, and why was it removed?

Collins AFAIK. I dont know why it was removed, possibly too many already.

I believe you maybe referring the the Royal Navy with that statement. While I am not one, usually to come to the defence of the British, The Royan Navy has in the order of 90 ships, as follows:

Aircraft Carriers - 2 (+1 in reserve, at 18 months reactivation notice)
                Helicopter Carriers - 1
                Frigates - 17
                Destroyers - 8
                Landing Platform Docks - 2
                Minesweepers - 16
                Patrol Vessels - 23
                Aux/Survey Ships - 5
                Nuclear Submarines - 13
1 Type 82 Destroyer permanently tied up, used for training.
1 Cruiser for HQ and Training of the Royal Navy Reserve
                1 HMS Victory (Trafalgar)

Oh, and there's only 16 Admirals.

The Irish army isn't big enough to have a full General.

I think there was afew after Collins. But Barry is correct, our size barely warrents a Lt. Gen.
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

Sean Mc Mahon, aug 1922-mar 1924. Stop Guessing MOB. There were 4 full generals after Collins. He was the First.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

The Irish Army is probably top heavy as regards most officer/NCO ranks. The system lends itself to rapid expansion.
There was a system in the US where officers held two ranks one being a brevet rank [higher]which was assumed in a conflict.
You have also got to have some sort of career structure. If you base your rank structure purely on numbers you are going to lose some of your best leaders and be left with ploders and time servers.

If you think that Irelands got too many General Officers for a Defence Force of its size, take a comparison with New Zealand with the 26 we have to cough up for. A classic case of far too many Chiefs and not enough Indians in its Defence Force of around 12000 personnel.

Chief of Defence Force - Lieutenant General
Vice Chief of Defence Force - Air Vice Marshal
Chief of Navy - Rear Admiral
Chief of Army - Major General
Chief of Air Force - Air Vice-Marshal
Commander Joint Forces New Zealand - Rear Admiral
                                Commander UNTFO - Major General
Assistant Chief Strategic Commitments & Intelligence -Brigadier
                                Assistant Chief Resources - Brigadier
                                Assistant Chief Development - Brigadier
                                Assistant Chief Personnel - Commodore
                                Maritime Component Commander - Commodore
                                Land Component Commander -Brigadier
Air Component Commander - Air Commodore
Deputy Chief of Navy - Commodore
Deputy Chief of Air Force -Air Commodore
Deputy Chief of Army - Brigadier
Head of Military Mission Canberra - Air Commodore
Head of Military Mission London - Brigadier
Head of Military Mission Washington - Commodore
Head of Military Mission Middle East - Brigadier
Director General of Medical Services - Brigadier
Defence Force Territorial Advisor - Brigadier
Director General of Legal Services - Brigadier
                                Judge Advocate General - Brigadier
Programme Manager Defence Sustainability Initiative- Air Commodore

Thats a 1:460 ratio. No wonder we struggle to get decent kit in the NZDF.
