  • Dog Tags / Identity Discs

Just wondering what the story is with dog tags in the Irish Defence Forces. Are they only issued if you go overseas or what? What type are they (US Army type or British round disc type)? What is written on them and what is the format?

    Any information would be appreciated.

I saw a set of issue I.D tags in the stores in Cathal Brugha. They are round discs with no silencers. The kind the British had in World War 2.

Thanks for the information. I believe the British still use that type.

"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.
