  • Time to replace Steyr?

As Mentioned on the wonderful Irishmilitary.com recently, the Australians are in the process of replacing their Locally built Steyr, the man I spoke to suggested that the M4 seemed to be the front runner to replace it.

Is it time for the Irish DF to begin considering a steyr replacment also? Is the bullpup design being rejected in international service?

(for those who missed it,Aussie Steyrs are fitted with an ALO, contrary to established teaching here..)

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

Was there not talk about the Aussie Steyr's problems being down to the fact that they were locally produced? They could be also changing due to their increased co-operation with the US.

Either way, I don't think the Steyr should be replaced unless it's found to be unreliable and/or unsafe.

What would an Aussie rifle change mean for the NZ armed forces?

Considering the commonality of resources between Australia and NZ,I guess it would follow that they would be expected to replace their rifle also, though theirs is not in service as long as the Aussies.

Isn't the Steyr as we know it out of production and moved to Taiwan?

The onlyphotos i have seen of malayasian steyrs have been ones of the aug3.

if you'd seen these photo's you'd say the same thing, bad welding!?!, cracked flaking paint job''s, rough metal pieces, ect, and these aug's were new , these were the original Malysian one's maybe they've improved alot, if they have, that's great, all I was saying was the one's I saw looked poor nothing more

You can't improve on perfection. the steyr has proved ideal for short staure soldiers and females and has improved the quality of shooting in the DF no end...stay with it..it was one of the better weapons the DF chose.

Seen the first one too while googling yesterday. But if the DF were to replace the steyrs they should maybe consider the M4 or the G36K.

Apparently a recent batch of Steyrs purchased by the DF has been nothing but trouble, with frequent parts breakages etc. These were probably Austrian production, but the Steyr company has gone through turbulent times in the last few years, similar issues existed with their commercial production.

As has been already stated, prodiction of the AUG is switching to Malaysia.

Have to agree with yj, the Steyrs without the button on the cocking handle do give A LOT of trouble compared to the those that do.

with all this talk of just changing the DF's main assault rifle has anyone actually thought of the logistical problems involved in such an act? would it just be the PDF which get a new weapon or would it be open to reserve forces eswell?
What is you major malfunction numbnuts!

It would follow that everyone weapon would be replaced,PDF and RDF(we use the same weapon after all)
