The RDF only just got the steyr. At least give us the chance to break a few before you get rid of them.

Seriously though, if it was to be replaced it would be replaced with the g36k, at least if I was in charge.

Frankly I'd rather see the GMPG replaced with a lighter system for section fsg

Yea but if it was to takes as long this time to replace the steyr's as it did the FN FAL's then they will have been well used.

Yea but what with. The brits have had problems with their minimis, 2 squaddies have been killed in training with them.

We didn't have the FN long either. The PDF had it from 1963 to 1989...we got it in 1990 and were giving it back in 2000

There was a difference between PDF & FCA weapons in the past because the FCA got PDF hand-me-downs. The DF is now striving for commonality of kit between the PDF & reserves, delaying the issue of a new rifle to reserves would be stupid.

You're assuming that the Minimi would be chosen to replace the MAG at section level. Either way, you cannot blame the deaths on the Minimi without having all the facts.

And we're talking about rifles, not MG's. Everyone stay on-topic.

Just thinking, considering irish troops operate wif swedish troops overseas alot and talk of them becoming members of the same european battlegroup then why not replace the steyr wif the ak5.

One thing that troubles me about the bullpup nature of the Steyr is that if you're firing around a right hand corner, you have to expose your entire body (or get a faceful of hot brass), thus leaving you wide open to be slotted by any semicunning badguy who has realised that people need to come around that corner. Theoretically, of course.

Lean over. You expose more than a left-handed rifle would, but expose only your shoulders and above.

The FN F2000 is a truly ambidextrous bullpup, the spent casings are ejected at the front of the weapon allowing it to be fired from either shoulder without modification.

The bullpup design must still be considered viable by manufacturers, given the number of designs out there. Apart from the AUG, SA80 & Famas, there is the Israeli Tavor (being adopted by the IDF & trialed by Croatia) Singapore's SAR-21, a South African and a Chinese rifle. The South African rifle was due to be adopted but budget cuts shelved it.

That said,Its interesting that H&K have dropped the bullpup concept completely in the design of its new Generation of assault weapon, the G36.
