  • Rejoining the RDF

I know I'm going to get stick for this, and I have used the Search Function - I see Jag posted something similar three 2 years ago, but that thread has since been closed. Merge this if you must or if it's appropriate, but please don't delete.

Although I'm currently living and working in Paris, I have secured a teaching post in a reputable 3rd level college in our nation's capital for September and will have a lot of time to dedicate to the RDF. What I would like to know is this:

How can I go about rejoining/finding out whether I'm still on the books? I completed recruit camp about 6 years ago, but had to leave due to commitments at university, I'm on good terms with my old Commandant and a reference won't be a problem. As I'm going to be in Dublin, I'm interested in joining 62 Res MP coy (is this possible as a pvt?), or 62 Res. CIS Coy.

    Advice is appreciated.
    Cannon to right of them,
    Cannon to left of them,
    Cannon in front of them
    Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
    Boldly they rode and well,
    Into the jaws of Death,
    Into the mouth of Hell
    Rode the six hundred.

You were sworn in, and signed on for 3 years. You attended recruit camp, and then left. That was 6 years ago. Last time, I checked, 3 year contracts still last for 3 years, so you are now a civilian, and free to join any unit like any other civvie (though technically your old unit could ask for anything and everything issued to you to be returned to them first)

I'm not 100% on the story with MPs, but there are no privates (not for any length of time, that is) - you do a Provost's course, and are promoted to Cpl afterwards, at which point you are a trained traffic cone/MP

Knowing some units you may still be on the books, but my old unit got rid of people that hadnt shown up in ages before the re org.

As for an MP unit, I believe you can join as a recruit and they will train you up as I know somebody who is currently doing this in Cork.
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

Barry, thanks. I'll begin to make the appropriate approaches. Anyone on the board with 62 MP/CIS?

        1 pair of boots (mucky)
        1 beret (FCA issue)

the beret might come in handy as a spare the rest are useless.

you should have a look at all the units in the Dublin area before settling on one,

this post (http://www.irishmilitaryonline.com/b...&postcount=110) says it could take up to 18 months to do the comm operators course, thats a long time to be a 2 star

            In CBB you have

            Inf,
            Medics
            CIS
            Cav
            Air Defence
            MPs

            In Mckee you have

            Engineers
            Arty
            Transport
            Medics
            MPs
            Inf

            "Try before you buy" tbh
You're even dumber than I tell people

You might have been infected but you never were a bore

A post has disappeared in the move. Was this not moved to General originally?

CB Barracks would be most convenient, I would opt, in order of preference, for MP, CIS and then Medics. Sampled the Inf, it's great but I'd like something different - maybe cav?

                Why the Mp's?

I'd imagine it would be one of the most interesting corps in the RDF, and one that I could apply my educational background to, I suppose.

Contact your former unit on the off chance you are still on the books.

Really? Why? Not that I'd be easily put off.

At the start its all basic stuff foot drill and the likes, nothing to engage a young recruit, Straight in and into the foot drill, No classes on mil law or what the basic mission of mp's is,could have been thu unit i was parading with..............In contrast, when i started with the AD i was being shown how to strip a steyr and gpmg on my first night.

                          just found it more engaging.

Ps i'm not a gun nut or anything, i'm just saying that as a potential recruit the sight of what i would be eventually doing, engaged me more than been thrown in the "blue" room for foot drill

Come up north and join the TA instead, just like the ever increasing crowd of mercenaries from the south

You trained as a lockhard? How long did you go to school for that?
