A friend of mine applied for the RDF last November. He was called up for his hearing test (which he passed) and then didn't recieve any word until last week.
He has been asked to re-apply at his nearest unit. What was the reason for this ?
He had turned 17 a month beforehand so the age wasn't an issue. Unit was 6 FAR btw,
Any ideas.
"The artillery was my strongest tool. Often it was my only reserve .... I repeatedly said it was more a matter of the infantry supporting the artillery than the artillery supporting the infantry.... I wish I knew the countless times that positions were taken or held due solely to TOT's ...."
Depends on where he lives etc. Did he join his nearest unit.
I have a cousin who applied to join in September. He did his audiogram after xmas and his medical in the last month. He still hasn't been signed up. In that time, my own unit have had 2 intakes of recruits and are working on our 3rd. From applying to sign up in 2 months. Now I can't speak for other units but I was under the impression that the application process had sppeded up dramatically. I'm still surprised at how long it is taking my cousin to join.
Yeah, he joined with nearest unit, living in Newbridge, so nearest was 6 FAR in Curragh Camp. Did I hear something about that unit standing down as of re-org thought ? Could be the reason for delays...

well when i was joining up it took about six months or so from the time i first went up to sign on until i got sworn in. its been my expierience that the army is just a case of hurry up and wait! but they were talkin a lot about speeding up the process, security clearance and the like but from what ive read here doesnt look like its workin much good!
I think it depends very much on the unit. i know of guys who have been attested within weeks. the security clearance was the slowest part of the entire process
The length of the enlistment process is dependant on a number of factors:
How efficient the company staff are at the paper work.
How quickly the security clearance comes back.
The availablility of places for audiograms and medicals (and those that are given places turning up).
Timing and location of said audiograms and medicals.
Docman as Lt McCarthy says it depends very much on the unit and sub-unit.
I recall enlistments being processed (clearance, medical & audiogram) in less than a week. That it was just before camp and there was only one recruit (yours truly) may have been a factor.
Take these men and women for your example.
Like them, remember that posterity can only
be for the free; that freedom is the sure
possession of those who have the
courage to defend it.

"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"
It took me from march to next feb to get enlisted in the RDF
it just varies from unit to unit, time of year & mainly on how lazy the gardaí are with security clearance
The school of artillery told us it couldn't be done...
They were wrong.
Thats why i started the process before i was 17. By the time my birthday came around in april i had my audiogram done, my medical done and my clearance was back. Took months but when i was 17 i could be sworn in straight away. Garda clearance had the longest waiting time.
Trouble, Trouble, I tried to chase trouble but its chasing me.
Trouble, trouble, trouble with a capitol T
do do do do do do do da do do do. etc etc......
I enlisted on the second week of January and I'm still waiting, I live in Dundrum and I put it into the 62nd Res. I gave them a call on Monday, and I got a lengthy explanation which can be summarized like so: Hurry up and prepare to wait! But I'm patient enough, I can understand that ye can't just give anyone a gun. I'd like to know what takes the longest in the process, I'm guessing it's the background check and all that would be my bet.
