Goldie fish 18th April 2006 16:13 Unless the department decide to give it back that is. In many cases these training centres were on 50 year leases to the DF, from the local council. As most of these halls came into use by the LDF during or after the Emergency...the lease is well past.

Joshua 18th April 2006 16:37 I heard that the only training centre in Dún Laoghaire is being closed from the 28th of April because the DoD wont pay the lease ( €47,000 per annum approx). This will leave one of the largest youth populations, per local authority area, without any reserve presence. The training centre for B Coy 62 Bn is being moved to Bray, which apart from being in a different county is being used by a different unit already! When this centre goes, who’s to say the next most expensive training centre will be next for the chop. B Coy have been actively looking for a place in their area ,but without knowing how much the DoD is willing to pay in rent their hands are tied. Whats the story?

the approaches which have been made to his
Department seeking to purchase property at
Rockbrac House, Bray, County Wicklow; and if
he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Defence (Mr. O’Dea): My Department
currently holds the house and lands at the
location in question, comprising an area of 4.83
acres in all, under lease. Over the years the
Department has received approaches regarding
the disposal of its interest in the property. It is
not the practice to divulge the identity of such
interested parties. The Department’s property
portfolio is kept under continual review and any
properties deemed surplus to military requirements
will be disposed of to fund much needed
investment, to meet the equipment and infrastructure
needs of the Defence Forces.

Whats the story?

B Coy may be moving to Bray but that does not mean all it's members will be moving there.

Of course the move is completely unjustified. The company has the largest cachment area in for one sub unit in the whole country. -c.200,000 which all live within a relatively small area.

The problem is the unit is not very well know in the area so the public don't know about it (in general) and therefore don't care. Therefore, those cowboys (and cowgirls) in government can get away it.

A unit which has been present in the area for over 60 years, and which was there when its country needed it (the emergency, the troubles etc...) is essentially going to vanish tomorrow.

"Construction firm employee's and equipment surround entrenched armed Army Resevists"

While the contruction firms employess are equipped with shovels and spades, diggers and cement mixers. The Reseviists have held off countless advances on their position through the use of aggressive fire from assault rifles and machine guns.

A spokesman for the construction firm said that they are keeping there vehicles and heavy equipment away from the area as it is rumoured that the Reserveists have a number of AT weapons at there disposal.

The situation is set to continue for at least the rest of the day.

To put in context the issue of the closure of this centre this document on the history of the company might prove interesting reading to some.

Sad to see a center go like that. At least if it was due to inactivity you could agree with the decision and eventually get over it. But to do this to a unit that has one of the lasgest catchment areas in the country is nuts. Nuts i say.

Thats unfortunate to hear about your training centre are on the way out. Are one we use is actually under a new investment program which have seen new Security Perimeter Fences been put up,Newly Painted Interior, Planned New Shower Facilitys aswell as a possible updated store room and small kitchen facility.

Through good management are are Training Centre is utilised well by our own unit in the RDF aswell as are parent unit in the PDF and near by BTC for example thus highlighting the use of it and near by land as a valuable resource in its location to the whole of the DF its a pity it cant be like that for all units.

Would it be possible or feasible for the company to move back to Oatlands college? I used to go there and would say I'd be able to convince them to let us have it one night a week.
