Hi im new.Ive been thinking of joining the RDF for a while now and just happened to come across this site so I thought..Where else to get an honest opinion. As I am over the age to join the PDF I was told by someone that I could get in through the RDF, I felt this would be a good idea as it would give me an idea of what life might be like in the army and whether Id like to do it full time or not. I went about joining already(brought in the passport fotos and all) but unfortunatly I had an appointment with an ear specialist coming up,so I had to put off joining. I ended up having an operation.Ive had to wait for 6 months to see how the operation worked and was only last week back in the hospital. It was recommended to me not to join coz of the guns!! But I was thinking to myself that id prob hardly ever see a gun in the RDF let alone have one firing beside my ear the whole time. But I also feel a bit embarressed goin down to my local RDF center after so long as the guy who I was in with was a really nice guy, and I'd hate him to think that I have just been messing him about. All this would also depend on whether I actualy pass the hearing test.Ive just always been intrigued by the army and dont know whether to just drop the whole idea or what. Any honest opinions greatfully appreciated.

Unless you're eligble to apply for the next competition for direct entry cadetships (i.e. hold the relevent qualification in engineering/medicne etc.) the only branch of the PDF you can join is the NS."The dolphins were monkeys that didn't like the land, walked back to the water, went back from the sand."

Good thinking Bam Bam. A Corps unit - CIS (radios & computers), medics, military police or transport - may be better suited.
The last think you should do is do anything which further damages your hearing at such a young age.
To get into the RDF you have to pass an audiogram (hearing test) which a lot of people find difficult to pass, you maybe should ask your doctor if you would pass this, before going back to the RDF, as it will cause you and them further hassle.
The following is the hearing requirements:
Hearing
A good standard of unaided hearing is essential. Candidates will be required to undergo an
audiometric test at which:
(1) the sum of the hearing threshold levels, at low and high frequencies, in each ear must
be less than the age related warning levels contained in the “Guidelines on Hearing
Checks and Audiometry” issued by the Health and Safety Authority, and,
(2) Candidates under 25 years of age must be able to hear all measured pure tones up to
and including 8kHz at 20 dB in each ear and candidates aged over 25 years and older
must be able to hear all measured pure tones up and including 8kHz at 25 dB in each
ear. Candidates must also be free from acute or chronic ear disorders.

The only Corps which does not fire weapons is the Medical Corps.
So don't know where this silly statement is going....
Corps units would possibly fire as much as Inf units in run ups to
shooting competitions, etc.
Even at that, the medics are routinely in situations where they are exposed to
gunfire (support role at gunnery shoots, annual camps, etc.)
If Smurf does not pass the entry hearing requirements, it's all academic anyway..."Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"
