The British Royal Navy is commonly referred to as the "Royal Navy" both inside and outside the United Kingdom. Commonwealth navies also include their national name e.g. Royal Australian Navy. However, there are other navies, such as the Koninklijke Marine (Royal Netherlands Navy) which are also called the "Royal Navy" in their own language.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

        Cannon to right of them,
        Cannon to left of them,
        Cannon in front of them
        Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
        Boldly they rode and well,
        Into the jaws of Death,
        Into the mouth of Hell
        Rode the six hundred.

Maybe in theory, but in practice are you really gonna board a suspect vessel and then sail away with nothing to show for it when you know the local tinpot ruler is gonna make a diplomatic incident out of it?

HMS Portland drugs bust - 29 Oct 2007

HMS Portland's sea boat with the vessel

Plymouth based Royal Navy warship, HMS Portland, has just made a drugs bust in the North Atlantic. Conducting a routine patrol, she launched her Lynx helicopter for a dawn search and found a suspicious looking fishing vessel. The decision was made to make a coordinated approach using the ship’s sea boats, helicopter and the ship itself. As the vessel was approached she increased in speed and the crew were seen throwing packages over the side. Once it was clear she could not escape, the vessel stopped and Portland’s boats recovered 500 kilograms of what turned out to be cocaine from the sea.

Having recovered the contraband onboard, the embarked US Coastguard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) contacted authorities back in the United States in order to gain permission to board the Venezuelan registered vessel. Having presented conclusive evidence, approval was given and Portland boarded the vessel using her LEDET team, augmented by sailors and Royal Marines of her own Ship’s Company. Following an extensive search over a ton and a half of cocaine was found onboard. The vessel is now being escorted to Venezuela where the local authorities will take over.

Why are the RIBs called "sea boats" or was it just a error on the part of whatever news source that story came from?

They are working in an area of the carribean in a combined drug enforcement effort under the overall organisational control of Homeland security. USCG has lately become the Maritime wing of Homeland security. Long trip to take an open boat....

Don't forget we have had our own busts in the past. This one was the Brime and was arrested by LE Orla.
Naval personel arrest the skipper of the Brime.

Hi Hedge, to the best of my knowledge its around 1995. It was around then that the new gear started to come in. The crew who were arrested then have done their time and moved on. One in particular studied to be a councelor in prison and on his release began working with drug addicts. To this day he is still helping them - sometimes in the gutter and their depths of despair. Hence the blanked face. Every one is entitled to move on.

                                Hi Hedge,

The difference is quite dramatic. In a floatation suit you float, but you also get wet! In an immersion suit you float, but you stay dry. (Most of the time that is). The down side is that you sweat a lot in them. The longest I spent in one was 38 hours, and thats another story.
The attached pic shows an imersion suit.
