In the RN, what's a Midshipman? They hold a rank, and are senior to WOs, but junior to S/Lts
          From wikipedia:

Although not commissioned, midshipmen are officers in the Royal Navy, and rank immediately below Second Lieutenants in the British Army and Pilot Officers in the Royal Air Force and above all enlisted and warrant ranks (since 1956; prior to this a Warrant Officer was considered senior to a Midshipman). A midshipman's rank insignia, which has changed little since Napoleonic times, is a white rhomboid piece of cloth with a gold button and a twist of white cord on each side of the coat collar.

Midshipmen were formerly appointed by warrant or simply entered onto a ship's books, but today, like other subordinate officers, hold their ranks by Admiralty Board orders. In Napoleonic times boys could only be rated midshipmen after two years at sea, after which they were eligible to sit the examination for Lieutenant after a further four years, being at least 19 years of age. Today the rank is only held by officers under the age of 20, at which age they are appointed Sub-Lieutenants (or Acting Sub-Lieutenants where this rank still exists). Until they have completed initial sea training, both midshipmen and sub-lieutenants at Britannia Royal Naval College do not use their substantive ranks, but use the non-substantive rank of Officer Cadet

                Hi all
Hedge, would they have to create a special hat for this worthy bonus-earner? A big extra-large hat like a Russian one or a semi-Nazi one like some of the S.Americans wear? make him wear a sword, too. All the time....even in the jax/heads......and his own flag...and his own speedboat for shuttling to the bank in Cob-h with the big bonus cheques....what a country.
                regards
                GttC

                      really

I was under the impression that all our generals (including your lad) got at least 10%

of there pay as a pre agreed bonus

when they all acheived certain objectives

Army GOC's had to attain the objectives they themselves set out in there trainig plans

and top sea dog part of his objectives were to ensure that so many hours were spent at

                      sea

I may have to isssue a few apologies

He did. It is my understanding that PDFORRA lobbied for it to be revoked when he increased the sea days of some units, (I was on one), to 221 days PA. Not gospel. When I research it fully Ill make a post.

mate thats the same story I heard

                          hopefully it was revoked

but even more hopefully, he would have had the decency to decline it

PDFORRA looked for him to contribute it to a fund initially

but when he stopped spitting out his claret and stopped laughing over

                          his caviar, he politely declined

We Give our OUTs more responsibility than the RN do.
