rejoining the irishnavy??

hi there , i left the navy a few years ago , and ever since i kinda regretted it.

i joined young and didnt know what i wanted to do really.

life in civvy street is much harder , i miss the handy life in the navy!

now i actually have to work for a living!


im still young enough just about , are thet recruiting at the moment?

I served from 1980 to 1992. The only reason I left was that I was given no choice as I was Medical Category C following motorcycle accident.

Had I had the choice I would have stayed in the service but that was not up to me.

One thing I would say is do not re-join just because it is harder in civvy street, re-join because it is what you want to as a career option, not as an easy way out.

I have seen this a lot.

When people join they often dont know what they want to do with their lives just like the lyrics to the sunscreen song, and just join for a trial period now, unlike the 80s and 90s when you joined for the steady job and pension.Admittedly the pension in that form is no longer available.

It is so easy to forget the reasons you left when faced with work on the outside, which seems a bit uncertain as opposed to the routine(or lack of) in the navy.Remember you are not lugging cavity blocks around a building site, but when at sea you are putting in way longer hours and at the end of that day you dont go home to family.

A friend of mine left two years ago and recently said to me that it took the navy 18 years to "break" him but it only took the civvies 18 months and again he said he regretted leaving.

Yes far away fields are greener but as i said, dont forget the reasons you left because if you rejoin those reasons will more than likely still be there and may be worse than when you left. Just talk to people who have rejoined before making that decision.

Admittedly the ones i know had a way better idea of what they wanted to do their second time in and were armed with the knowledge to obtain what they needed to achieve more quickly.

Also you may have a family now and believe me, its a totally different kettle of fish once you have sprogs of your own to leave when going to sea.The navy was a hobby for me until my first child was born and now it is more a job.

Very valid points Alan and Navy Trooper( welcome btw) its easy to see it through rose tinted glasses after a while and as was said the reason you left may well still exist within the service.

Albeit being older and wiser it is probably a well informed descision second time around if you are lucky enough to get a second oppertunity.
