From the BBC link
There is currently one helicopter on scene beginning to wince people off the stricken vessel - two other helicopters are expected shortly, one from Prestwick and another from Dublin Coastguard. It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.

That might explain the involvement of a CG Helicopter.
Ironically this is the day after the 55th anniversary of the Princess Victoria disaster -
Looked on the AIS site, it seems to be making 3knts back towards Heysham.'History is a vast early warning system'. Norman Cousins

They're now saying on BBC that they can't rule out the possibility that it will capsize.
I hope not.
Whats the critical list point for a ship of that type, or is there no exact answer to that ?
Will the cargo make it more unstable - lorries, trailers etc ?'History is a vast early warning system'. Norman Cousins

The position of the cargo(trailers mostly) would have caused its current difficulties. Sixty degrees is pretty close to the max. However a car carrier a few weeks ago done something similar. Didnt capsize, but the new Volvos aboard were all written off....

Thanks Dogwatch.I was about to do the same. 1/4 mile west of the coast at the moment. She is in shallow water, which may help. Its expected to be blown ashore at Blackpool.
6 of 23 rescued so far. RNLI Lifeboats also on scene from Fleetwood and Lytham St Annes.(Mersey and Tyne class)

Stranded Ferry Runs Aground
Updated:02:56, Friday February 01, 2008
A major rescue operation to save the remaining crew of a ferry stranded in appalling weather conditions in the Irish Sea has been halted for the night.
Fourteen people have now been airlifted from the Riverdance, which has run aground off the coast at Blackpool. Nine crew members are staying on board.
Efforts will be made to try to float it off a sandbank at high tide at around 6am.
Of the four passengers taken to safety, three were in their 60s and one in his 30s.
The Riverdance was carrying 23 people and at one point was listing at 60 degrees with 70mph winds and high seas hampering the rescue effort.
