This is the British Registered Spanish longliner / gillnetter (Brit-Span) 'Spinningdale' which went aground in St. Kilda. She used to fish pre-dominantly off the west coast.
Highly unlikely as St Mawgan is not on any formal standby. 203 Sqn based there are a training unit and not an active SAR unit. They can be used but for tasks in the local area or major incidents.
Where as 22 Sqn at Chivenor which is not that far away is on standby with two HAR3A's.
Wouldn't steel stand up much better to being battered on the rocks than GRP?
Hi Easyrider, I'm afraid that any boat wether it is made of GRP, steel or cement won't stand up to the effects of the sea and rocks. Have a look at the attached photo of the 'Ranga' which went aground on Slea Head, Co. Kerry some years ago. This photo was taken in 1988, but nothing remains of her now.
Spider, thanks for the information - very interesting!
Just heard, the Crew of the Trawler Spinningdale were rescued by Stornoway Coastguard Helicopter flown by Liz Forsyth. This was the first time that a woman pilot had carried out an air evacuation from a ship in UK waters.
Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.
