  • Perisher

Here's an interesting online article I came across, from the views of a USN officer taking the infamous Royal Navy Perisher Submarine Command course.

There's been a show on Military Channel all week about the Perisher course, including one US submariner. Interestingly the US tactics on encountering a FV are total opposite. The USN go deep, the RN surface immediately. The RN have followed this method since causing the sinking of an FV some years ago. Following USN tactics almost got the US officer kicked off the course.

What is an FV? I'd guess fishing vessel?

F/V= fishing vessel. Yep they were pretty harsh on him, whether it is was using him as an example, I don't know.

There was a Northern Ireland RN officer also. The USN officer only acted iaw USN ROE, didn't deserve the roasting he got.

Interesting stuff, the BBC did a doucmentary on ''perisher'' some years ago, the name originaly came from the offical course name which was periscope school and applied to submarine commanders[in training] only, Now it applies to anyone who is likely to become a ''Number one'' or second in command. Perisher= either you pass or perish.

Don't even pretend to suggest that by being onboard a sub, you know anything about the job.
