Asgard 2 Sinking in Bay of Biscay

    • The actual operating costs of Asgard II were quite low. A permanent crew of 4, and the priority was to be under sail rather than under engines. Because of her size, survey's could be done in most of the larger boatyards capable of hauling a trawler out of the water.
      The trainees effectively paid their own board, and brought their own sleeping bags.
      Routine maintenance was carried out by numerous volunteers around the country during the off season (I was one).
      All in all it was a very efficient operating model.
      For now, everything hangs on the CoDF report, still possibly 2 weeks from the Ministers desk.

            I’m not debating those facts, just feel it will get lost between everyone claiming the few million it would cost to buy would fix “X problem” and the current North South relationship. Logically there’s no reason we can’t/shouldn’t replace her (though how many are available second hand?), but logic rarely wins in politics.

            • Sail training has a history of being beneficial to those in a position to avail of it. Much beloved by "sailing people" and supported by the Afloat Media. Our history so far has ranged from building two larger vessels SV Jeannie Johnston and SV Dunbrodie and the 84ft Asgard 11. The former builds were driven by nostalgia but no structures emerged to put them into viable use. They remain as tourist points in Dublin and New Ross. The Asgard did stalwart work taking people to sea for social and recreational reasons. Her loss was unexpected and might require a different approach to her future replacement. I have only sailed ever on the Older Asgard and am not experienced but would recommend that an expert body would be needed to select a suitable vessel for about 20 all-hands, including permanent crew. I think in terms of steel hull, at least two watertight bulkheads, bilge water level alarms with auto-pumps and possibly schooner rig to limit mast climbing. As always a home port and future maintenance is critical.

              • I visited a sail training ship from the US that allowed university students to crew it for college credits. It was very a very interesting setup

                    Going aloft is the best part of Sailing a tall ship. Brigantine or Barquentine is an ideal rig. Asgard II had accom for 20 trainees as well as her permanent crew, who had their own cabins. The best description is a Mess-deck. Trainee bunks were in the main dining/socialising area, 6 bunks P & S amidships and the balance foread in more compact "coffin" bunks.
                    The Floating museums were a disaster. Dunbrody cannot operate either under her own power or sail, and Jeannie Johnson while independently mobile, is still restricted in her usefulness due to being designed as a museum, rather than a sail training ship.
