No, you are still confused. Captain equates to army Colonel. Last time I checked, there was only one Captain in the NS. You don't get it by putting in the time. You apply for it, and are promoted on merit. The days of promoting higher ranks on the basis of seniority ended a few years back thanks to RACO. Indeed, he may get the job ahead of another commander who was promoted earlier than him.

Eh...only one.. don't think so as the MES is a Captain also, so there are two positions for Captains N/S .
Is Captain James Robinson DSM, up for Retirement?
Commander Ryan also held the record for youngest ships captain at one stage having been O/C L.E. Grainne at about 27.
( Ship was in commission at the time as opposed to then Lt. Martin Brett taking command of Deirdre when decomissioned.)
If Cdr Eugene Ryan is up for Captain Promotion that could possibly make him next FOCNs as I think Cmdre Lynch still has some time to serve, Cpt Robinson will probably have reached the age limit for his own retirement and Cdr Ryan would be holding appropriate rank for Flag position.

Well given that he was O/C of LE Eithne about 5 years ago ( A commanders appointment) he's held the rank for quite some time now...his rank is easily spotted, the gold braid on the cap is a dead giveaway...its all in the small but sometimes obvious details.Covid 19 is not over ....it's still very real..Hand Hygiene, Social Distancing and Masks.. keep safeComment

But its not a perfect world. I have never heard of Barry doing anything of note in the last few years.

I would like to see Mark Mellet get the job, as he has been a very positive image of the service over the past few years.Alas according to the cadet class listings he is in fact junior in service to the other three and if service is still part of the criteria it puts him out of the loop by about two years.
But then again if Martin Counihane is up for Commander this would knock my theory as Martin McGrath is two classes senior to Counihane and took appointments ahead of of him .
Both very good officers and served with both.
Dave Barry and Hugh Tully have been very grey men for a long time. Both were very senior in terms of service in my day and not as high profile as Mark Mellet.
Very open draw here.Predicting the careers of Naval Officers while in the service is a very difficult task as some very prolific charachters such as John Leech and Chris Reynolds removed themselves from the equation relatively very early, both very capable officers and went onto very good things in water safety and the Coastguard.
Once upon a time being a diving officer was a guaranateed fast track promotion as both these men were and I'm sure still are well qualified divers, but saw oppertunity beyond the service.Covid 19 is not over ....it's still very real..Hand Hygiene, Social Distancing and Masks.. keep safeComment

Seniority is gone out the gap these days. Look at the recent promotions of CPO in Supplies. Junior man got it.
As for the CDR appt, I would not count out Tuohy. I wish I could but there you have it.

Seniority still plays a part in officer promotions. RACO fought hard for it. Or rather, you can get promoted ahead of those senior to you, but when you go for the next promotion, its a level playing field and they are all senior to you again.

No ..in fairness I haven't had any dealings with the man but in saying that he has had a fairly low profile..maybe thats a good thing!

Given that it's such a small Service, then the infighting for good slots will be of interest to all and will undoubtedly be closely fought, unless the "agreed" candidate has already been picked by them upstairs and they go thru the motions of an interview process, with consolation prizes for the losers.Canvassing will disqualify...the other guy
