Defence Forces investigate alleged breach within Naval Service

    Defence Forces investigate alleged breach
    Sunday, 22 November 2009 11:39

The Defence Forces have confirmed that a member of the Naval Service has been moved from his post and is the subject of an investigation into the alleged passing of sensitive information to civilians without authority.
It is understood the alleged breach concerns information about the movement of naval patrol vessels.
Naval Command became aware of the alleged disclosures last summer during regularly conducted security checks.
An investigation was carried out by Military Police, during which the person under investigation was interviewed.
The investigation concluded at the end of last summer and a file has subsequently been sent to the Director of Military Prosecutions.
He must decide whether or not to bring a case against the individual concerned under the Defence Acts.
In the meantime, the person against whom the allegations have been made continues to serve, but has been removed from the post where the sensitive information was being handled.
GardaĆ have also been made aware of the investigation and are participating in it.
The alleged information breach is being treated as extremely serious, because it may have concerned operations by gardaĆ, the naval service and Revenue Customs and Excise to combat the smuggling of drugs, weapons and other contraband in and out of the country.

Haha. There have been people doing this of rthe Customs cutter since she arrived as well.
Doesn't take much to work out where they might be if you have a couple of spotters keeping track.

Same goes for the port container scanners!

I take it these Customs Vessels don't show up on the Port arrivals list, as they do here!

Will be interesting to see what the outcome of a court martial would be or wil it just be a discharge from the DF and given over to the Gardai to deal with.

Discharge would of course be dishonourable.

          Possible sentence.

Yard arms and Keel hauling with or without cat o' nine tails being traditional naval punishments.

Normal Naval punishment used to be the guilty party

I would say that the DF, as is usual, if a more stringent sentence can be applied via
the Civil Power, will hand over the investigation to the Gardai

              Then again.... who knows

At MINIMUM, the individual is probably looking at a dishonourable discharge

As opposed to the army where they make them take off the make up for an extra week.
