A member of the Irish Naval Service has gone on trial at a military court martial in Dublin on charges of disclosing information about State ships at sea.

Able Seaman Eoin Gray, who is attached to the LÉ Orla, is also charged with conspiracy to aid people unknown to import cocaine between the 4 and 15 December 2008.

He is also charged with having cocaine in his possession and with having counterfeit hair straighteners.

He has pleaded not guilty to all five charges.

Seaman pleads guilty to charges at court martial
A member of the Irish Naval Service has pleaded guilty at a court martial in Dublin to disclosing information about the operations of state ships at sea.

Able Seaman Eoin Gray is facing a maximum of two years jail in the Curragh military prison when he’s sentenced tomorrow.

The military court heard Able Seaman Eoin Gray contacted a colleague at the Fisheries Monitoring Centre on a number of occasions in December 2008 to find out what was going on operationally with the ship he was serving on.

He wanted to find out if the LE Orla was on standby and whether he was free to go home for the weekend – he then texted this information to his girlfriend.

Today he pleaded guilty at a military court martial to disclosing information about the operation of State ships

Eoin Gray was also accused of conspiring to aid people unknown to import cocaine, with possession of cocaine and with having counterfeit hair straighteners.

These charges have now been dropped by the prosecution and sentencing will proceed tomorrow.

It is worth remembering that he is still open to criminal prosecution for the drugs charges, so people should be mindful of what they say lest they prejudice the man in any forthcoming case.

A naval officer has been sentenced to three months in military prison for disclosing sensitive information on the whereabouts of Navy ships.
Able Seaman Eoin Gray, who serves on the LE Orla, had originally been accused of five charges including conspiring to smuggle cocaine into Ireland but the charges were dropped.
He pleaded guilty at a court martial in McKee Barracks, Dublin, to one charge of knowingly and without due authority disclosing details on Navy ships at sea between December 4 and 14 2008.
He will also be discharged from the Defence Forces.
