  • Vessel detentions in Irish Ports

Quite often I read the vessel detentions carried out by the MCA in the UK. And more recently the case of the cruise vessel Vistamar that was detained in Belfast for having 10 faulty fire doors.

Does the ICG or Department of Transport have an enforcement unit that inspects merchant and passenger vessels at random whilst docked in Irish Ports. If so, are the detentions published online.

To answer you first question yes. I think the MV Rachel Corrie was one formerly one such vessal that was auctioned to pay back pay to the crew.

As regards to where it is published that I do not know.

The Dept of Transport has the responsibility. the ITF website carries a list of arrests in Ireland.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

Heres a list of current detentions. You can search by Port or flag state too.

It seems to be the Marine Survey Office of the Maritime Safety Directorate of the Department of Transport.
