Advanced lifeboat begins work in Co Wexford

The most modern and technically advanced lifeboat in the Royal National Lifeboat Institution fleet has started active service on the Irish coast for the first time.

The new all-weather lifeboat cost €3m and will be based at Kilmore Quay in Co Wexford.

The Tamar-class lifeboat arrived from England off the south Wexford coast.

The new lifeboat has a range of 250 nautical miles and is named 'The Killarney' following a request from an English widow, Mary Weeks, who left the entire cost of the boat to the RNLI.

Many people in the fishing village of Kilmore Quay turned out to welcome the 16-metre lifeboat, which has a maximum speed of 25 knots, compared to a max of 18 knots for the boat she is replacing.

'The Killarney' is fitted out with the most modern of navigation systems, has room for 44 survivors and will have a crew of six.
