  • Icelandic Coastguard in the Adriatic

Just reading the BBC News website about the latest ship in trouble carrying Syrian Refugees is under tow by the Icelandic Coastguard Ship "Tyr" its the fourth time she has been involved in incidents like this since her arrival in December, she is a long way from home, were there supposed to be Irish Navy Ships deployed there at one time ??

God I hope not, we'd end up being stuck with any "refugees" we found.

Interesting that Iceland can deploy 30%/50% of their fleet on Frontex.

As an island nation with aspirations to become a maritime nation we should contribute at some level to international maritime security. I personally would prefer if we became involved in Operation ATALANTA, the EU counter piracy mission.

As a county that exports 80% of what it produces. It is in our interest that the shipping lanes remain open, To date we have allowed other counties to patrol them for our benefit.
