  • This really sounds as though Ireland needs to seriously consider getting in to vessel design in a big way. Little off the shelf seems to fit our specific requirements and we can ill afford a poor design in our tiny fleet. Is there an argument making this a role for IMERC? If we've now identified a need which is not catered for in current designs due to the sea state conditions around Ireland, have we not also identified a problem which other small fleets face or will face as the climate continues to change? A chance to be the leaders in that field?

    • I like the idea but keep thinking about the Verlome debacle back in the 80s :( would we be burned again!?

      • That was a bit of a debacle, but I would suggest that it should be a lesson learned from rather than a reason not to do it again. But we are not going to build ships in Ireland realistically. This add another layer to the problem in dealing with foreign shipyard. But surely not insurmountable and, I think, the way forward for many navies.

        • While first prize is to design and build a ship which others want you to build for them, licensing a design which others can have built has potential benefits of its own.

                • pretty sure from my [limited] knowledge of power boats, they are better off with the propellers and rudders in the water...

First off the CPV's were an accidental acquisition courtesy of HMG at a give away cost. There is no grounds to replace them with a similar size or range of vessel. As a one off they should not be repeated.
We must not get into vessel design as the cost of experimentation is beyond our capacity. We should stay with some of the continental OPV's in the 70 to 90 meter range, especially those with rough weather profile. Daughter craft are specific to purpose for an on scene guard ship role. The offshore variety operate a 4 hour rota hook to hook. They are unsuitable for picking up casualties or landing parties. An 8 hour stint is not advisable.
Most OPV designs for the European theater are selectable, just avoid anything designed for the Indian Ocean.

                    • Two more P60's and requisition both ornamental customs cutters and place under full NS ownership. Problem solved.

                      • I'm with na grohmiti regarding commissioning 1-2 offshore support units. These are proven seakeepers, plentiful/cheap at the moment due to low oil exploration activity, and have a significant utility factor unmatched by specific/single purpose designs and when not dealing with mines, black boxes, etc can still do relevant patrol/guard duties.

                        • Vroon Offshore could be offloading a few of theirs shortly.
Netherlands-based Vroon Offshore Services will be laying up 12 offshore vessels “as a direct result of the ongoing slump in offshore oil and gas activities”, the company has announced....
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

These vessels are single purpose. Standard speed is 12kts or less! In a straight line chase quite a few trawlers would see an ERRV disappear astern. Such a vessel in a migrant situation would have some use but are certified for rescue up to 150+ or - . The utility factors of offshore oil vessels depend on their role such as cargo, emergency rescue, anchor handling. None do all roles and are duly classified by role.

                            • We need to have one of this type for specific tasks. While not OPVs or CPVs as the fleet grows we do need specialist type vessels. This would be an excellent EPV/ Diving Support Vessel / Support Vessel

                              • So something like the above could have a role, just not as a CPV replacement.

Along similar lines, is there any merit to the retention of Eithne post retirement from the OPV role, as an auxilliary/training vessel for NS recruits and cadets and also to work with IMERC as an R&D platform
                                for technology proving/ development?
