Great news. May this also offer the opportunity to replace the second hand Rhino’s with either Mauser 27 MLG or Leonardo 30 Marlin remote weapon stations, as the primary forward weapon on the new “P70’s” and secondary weapons on the P50’s / P60’s. Any thoughts?Sarsfield

Firstly congratulations to the Naval Service on buying a couple of good ships in good condition at a very good price.
Of course we wont see their replacement which was due 2023 has now been pushed out to 2027. No information on who is doing the refit and recommissioning. Assuming it is Babcocks (NZ) at the naval dockyard doing he work, but it may go back to Whangarei yard - no local announcement surrounding that.
Originally was conceived to have the 25mm Mk 38 mod 2 in RNZN service. A similar generic 25mm-30mm gun should be able to be installed and integrated.

Thanks ANZAC.
The public commentary on this has been interesting.
In NZ:
We should never have sold them, the reserve/(insert maritime organisation here) could have had them
Another bad decision make by Helen Clark
We should have sent them to Tonga/any other pacific island nation
Ireland will only use them to harass fishermen.
In Ireland
We cant crew them
They'll join the other ships on the quay wall
we could spend the money on health/housing/old people/puppies instead
They are useless without a gun
the Kiwis thought they were rubbish, why do we have them
More brown envelopes for Simon
Useless for Irish Waters.
Why is the work being done in NZ, why not let someone here do it.
We should have got Holland class OPV instead.
etc
We are a nation of Cranks. But its great to see how much in common we have with our brothers on Middle Earth. For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

You find most cranks on places like Facebook and in Newspaper columns. Plenty of muppets everywhere.
We only ever needed two IPV's and not four and with respect to OPV's we needed four and only got two. Politician budget caps the obvious issue.
Looking forward to seeing them up and sailing in the Irish Sea and now the attention can be turned towards the Eithne replacement.Last edited by Anzac; 15 March 2022, 06:33.
