Good idea except for the fact that cash runs don't really make for exciting television.

Havoc, try to see it from an outsiders viewpoint. Here the DF are, taking €700m or so of taxpayers money every year, and all they see is as you say, a few bored soldiers every week on the cash escort.
But look beyond that, to the recruit training, the overseas training, the ARW selection, The Naval vessels pounding through the seas in all weathers, the Air Corps doing whatever they do these days. To someone who has never seen how these things happen, such a documentary can be interesting. I remember watching a fascinating documentary on discovery once about the Below decks crew of a US aircraft carrier. A large portion of the time was taken with the life of a guy who worked in the Laundry.
Some years back, TG4 had a great series of shows dealing with each element of SAR at sea, which devoted one episode each to the Coastguard, Lifeboats, Naval service, and Air Corps, which was at that time still operating out of Finner.

Don't let the cynicism grind you down at such an early age.

All I'm saying is that, in my mind at least, most of the cool stuff the army wouldn't want the public to see. I can imagine the army letting a TV show about recruit training go on but it wouldn't show the day to day stuff. I could only see them doing interviews with the recruits afterwards when they're resting off not while they're doing the actual training.

            Hi all
Perhaps the only reason there haven't been more fly-on-the-wall documentaries about the PDF is the possibility of litigation,i.e; if some guy feels he's been shown in a bad light, he might get lawyered up and throw in a claim....apart from that, it might be the boredom factor. As you all know only too well, an awful lot of routine life in the PDF is deathly boring. Take out the gung-ho stuff and it can be mighty dull.

              Hi Guys
I think it is an excellent series and it does give a look at life in todays modern navies which I am sure is restricted on whats shown, nexts weeks one I think is going to be shore based, did any of you see another very good programme on BBC1 called "The Queens Cavalary" it finished yesterday and followed recruits for the three months of their traing both with horses and the armoured division until they passed out. I would love to see a programme about our own defence forces with one based on Navy,Army and air corps, come on RTE get the finger out and do it.

Thought it was very good. Gun pulling was very entertaining, shame about the final race though.

Watching the brand new naval recruits doing their foot drill was very funny too.

DS- SQUAD! FALL OUT BY THE RIGHT! Its all right it was a 50/50 chance!

                    Hi all
Wasn't overly impressed by "Tasha" myself. Whilst she had plenty of grit in taking part in the Field Gun training, her statement that she was absolutely unwilling to go to sea, under any circumstances, 'cos of her kids, took away from her achievements. The whole point of the Navy is the sea.If all she wanted to be was a gym instructor, she could find work outside in a heartbeat. No point in bleating about how wonderful RN tradition is, if you don't want to participate in it's main tradition, i.e; going to sea.

exactly, while I can't talk about the INS, the number of people in the RN finding excuses to get out of sea going/frontline drafts is constantly amazing. The thing is they are happy enough to draw the pay and swagger about gobbing off about the old days!!!!!
