  • Naval un medals

Over the last several months I have been asked by quite a few ex naval personal on the issues of UN medals -I know a lot of you have done several trips to the leb (me included) in the 80's
i have this company www.skanhandel.com emailing me advising me that ex NS personnal do indeed qualify for a medal
i know medals are presented - what do you think????
need answers to get back to these ex members

The medals from Skanhandel.com are unofficial medals and can only be worn by ex-personal contact the IUNVA or local ONE Branch they may be able to help.

I went over seas on the aoife, and yes we should be entitled to a volunteers meadal as we did fly the UN flag and get paied for the trip
as far as I can see we are entitled to a medal if you served 30 days or more the resupply trip to the leb was about 6 weeks

When you say UN Medals Moggy are you reffering to

the resupply trips to Beiruit- or actual Sailor types serving with UNIFIL

I served with a few sea dogs in the Leb and my Jaysus

were they perverted, warped, immoral and otherwise great blokes

To my mind Moggy there is only two medals issued for a standard Leb trip The UNfil Medal With (Blue green red & White Ribbon, Bronze medal). and the Silver coloured Medal with Green White & Orange and Blue stripe ribbon. An Naisiuin Aontaite. United Nations. For Peace.

There are no awards for the resupply Missions. Someone recently made a quip about NSR personnel on a resupply trip that went looking for the medal!!!!!

I think the waters are a bit muddied here lads.

Feel free anyone to correct me.

I do not think that any has ever been given either a Unifil or UN medal for a re-supply mission.

I also think that you have to be in country for x amount of days to qualify for a medal.

I have only done one trip in the 76th battalion so I would not be an expert. I have done 3 resupply missions and never had any award for any of these.(Or maybe I was in the canner when they were given out)

                    90 days aggregate

in theory IF a Sailor did a load of resuply trips

totalling 90 days would he be entitled to the Medal-

                    Just asking

The most time any ship would be in a port in the mission area would be 24-36 hours from my experience. You would have to do back to back missions for a Sh%$load of time to work up the hours.

Re UN Medals I have attached memo from UN HQ re entitlement .

                            United Nations Medals
The United Nations medal has been issued for many UN Missions. Each medal has had a distinctive medal ribbon.
As for the medal there are 2 versions. One for Europeans, which has a flat globe and the United States version which has a raised globe.
Eligibility for the medal is usually 90 days but some missions have been extended to 180 days. Medal recipients who complete subsequent 6 month tours on the same mission are awarded a silver numeral that is worn on the ribbon.

Definetly. Ok took alook at some of the people who got to go...then think of the Lunatics who were never left go..HH you were far safer out there with some of the blokes you had on side, had some of the others turned up the whole thing would have gone down the pan very rapidly.

Lets see one night in Bantry...the Skibeeren bus stolen and used to convey some of the punters back from skibereen and then the chipper asked do they do' battered cat'...the obvious answer was' no 'until some one threw a roadkill cat into the fryer...just one night in Bantry..six months overseas...eh ...no
Covid 19 is not over ....it's still very real..Hand Hygiene, Social Distancing and Masks.. keep safe
