Why not try the Red Ensign association in the UK..assuming it was the British merchant navy he served with.
the other one is the Irish seamans association..I'll try find the link.

    Tracing a Merchant Seaman...

    Hi Folks
My late grand-uncle, Michael John Donoghue, served as a Merchant Seaman, across the Atlantic, in WW II. He was torpedoed and survived the sinking of his ship, being the sole survivor and was landed at New York(possibly) after rescue. He was unable to contact his family until he shipped back to the UK and sent what must be the drollest telegram of all time," All gone, bar one.Michael John". I would like to trace his sea-going career, if possible. Any direction would be appreciated.
    regards
