Or in Eithne's case 12 hours to fix a bump with a hole in the steering flat sustained while berthing in Verlome at the end of a days sea trials , when we returned the following morning it just needed a lick of paint on the patch .
Don't spit in my Bouillabaisse .

    • What do they mean when they say "Large Factory trawler" I hear you ask...

For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Irrespective of internal work, a long lay up requires the engines and propulsion to be run up on Harbour trials, followed up by adjustments and full sea trials, all to validate work done and paid for by way of guarantee.
Pictures today of P51 post HATS being towed by two Tugs, looks like dead ship, to the Oil wharf. Why not under her own power??

        • Some AIS action sowing Roisin at sea , outside Cork harbour..

          • Intriguing watching Roisin on AIS, speed quite low, when at sea, and anchored overnight off Spit Bank Bn.?. Conversely two P60's left the Harbour , a couple of days ago , at 19.8 knots which is quite high for a cool engine, especially when they are still not clear of the harbour.

Just for Interest about the versatility and potential of OPV'S . HMS FORTH picked up a flown in Consignment of Astra-Zeneca vaccines 450 doses in the Falklands and headed on a planned weather advantageous voyage to Tristan da Cunha to beat winter storms. The ship had a suitable sick bay fridge and a surgeon Lieut. medic. The vaccine was delivered by a first naval visit in 6 years after a fuel exhausting 5000 miles return journey. Population at Tristan is 200 souls. Her sister TAMAR has just received a first Dazzle coat of paint BLACK WHITE GREY before deployment to the Far East. Interesting that the crew on Forth was made up of RN elements in Falklands in addition to Portsmouth complement. They must have spares at Falklands.

It seems that skill may be required now. Rumour that a FFV berthing at Deep water Quay Cobh has been in contact with the bow of P64. We must soon provide safe berthage for our Naval ships or we will run out operational units. Sorry for all involved. I tried to view the area but heat haze obscured a clear sight of the Quay. I was puzzled as Cork "Ships in Port " doesn't show P64 at DWQ but does show De Hoope a Belgian Beam Trawler, who is the alleged culprit. Another find adjacent to Fort Davis is a SIMRAD S Band scanner mounted on a twenty foot, or so, tower. It's a surface marine radar and is it operational or operable and by whom??

                • Following the recent bouts of vessel interceptions between the West Coast of Africa and attempted smuggling of drugs into Dublin Port, the head of MAOC(N) Lisbon, Mr. M O'Sullivan has been speaking to our MOD about deploying an Irish Naval vessel to Cape Verde Area. Good research will be needed to identify a secure support procedure for the ship to cover consumables and personnel supports including pre-arrival medical protections. Probably need a doctor on board, and make water offshore as needed. Cape Verde is a group of islands of Portuguese interest, Maybe some liaison there also pre-entry.

Worked with some Cabo Verde crewmen back in the day. Most of whom were residents of Rotterdam, who spoke a mix of creole and Portuguese.
The area would be a great opportunity for the Service, however I struggle to think of any mainland port we could consider as a home port. Anything East of Cabo Verde is struggling to contain ISIS, with France commencing a new operation in the Sahel. Perhaps operating from Las Palmas would be a more practical option for now, with the support of the Spanish Navy?

                    • Would we really be able to send a ship with the way personnel numbers are? If we can afford to I think it's a great idea.

Unless they cut back on other hulls and operations to sustain such a deployment I doubt it, though something out of EEZ may help some aspects of the manpower crisis, but risks making it worse at the same time, suppose it depends on how the DOD acted.

                        • Is there a factor that an overseas mission of this type would retain those considering leaving, or even bring back those recently departed from.the service, if there was a mechanism.in place.to get them back.

                          • There are at least 2 islands in the Cape Verde group with modern berths but they are probably not exclusive to a sole use. Praia has 850 metres of quay wall. The last time I looked HMAS Hobart was alongside amidst stacks of Maersk Containers. The major Island has 1800 metres of berthage at 12.5 metres max. so might be more tenable. Hobart is a DDG and has done some drug interdiction.

Nice time of the year for a cruise in the Med!
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
                                Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.
