    hey, I've heard you can stay on for a second 6 months overseas, is this hard to do? i.e. if you request it what are your chances of being let stay? and would being away from your battalion for 6 months affect things there for you like would you come back an outsider?

    cheers,

    Most positions for extensions are of a specialist nature..ie..Medic,Sigs,Driver,MP,etc.Most Bn Elements go out on full strength..However If a Bn who is forming up can't get enough volunteers,Men(plural) who haven't been overseas in a while can be detailed.

    I'm not saying Its impossible to get an extension as an Infantryman,but you have a greater chance as a Corpsman. hope that helps.

      Whats the wait like between joining your unit and going overseas? I've met ORs who went overseas within a year of passing out, but Officers seem to wait a few years, even longer if they go to college. Any idea why that is?
      "Why, it appears that we appointed all of our worst generals to command the armies and we appointed all of our best generals to edit the newspapers. I mean, I found by reading a newspaper that these editor generals saw all of the defects plainly from the start but didn't tell me until it was too late. I'm willing to yield my place to these best generals and I'll do my best for the cause by editing a newspaper"

        think of it as a triangle

        there are loads of Private vacancies - so therefore Privates will get to travel O/S quicker

        and at the apex of the Triangle

        there is only 1 Officer per platoon and therefore

        they only get to go after a while

        of course there are exceptions
        Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
        Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
        The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
        The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
        The best lack all conviction, while the worst
        Are full of passionate intensity.

            i know a few people who did back to back trips.

            mostly because the unit forming up still had vacancies. the CO went and asked for bods interested in staying on towards the end of the trips. a few weeks leave and they were back for the second six months. no major problems. some guys had to change appointments for the second six months but it just a case of filling whatever spots were still free.

                        You must have served with army magicians.

                        They take the best of ingredients, and the most tried and tested recipies, and turn it into absolute crap.

                        Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.
