Todays Sindo cast aspitions on weather the army could or want to go to Darfur as no other europaen nation, the Scandanavians Brits or Yanks want to go to Darfur. This leads to the question it seems that we would be the token whites and would we have the logistics and protection to operate albeit on our own amongst other african or Aisan trrops.
They seem to have sources with the DF that are not to keen in deploying there although they do want another substantial UN mission.

peacekeeping in Darfur
According to a report in today's Irish Times,
".....The AU (African Union) will continue to supply all the infantry for the 20,000-strong force but other nations will provide transport aircraft, helicopters and logistics, while command will be under joint UN/AU leadership..."
We don't have any transport aircraft, the Air Corps aren't allowed deploy abroad (even if they wanted to), so that leaves logistics...Comment

Chad rather than Darfur?
Seems likely an EU force will go to eastern Chad, where it borders the Darfur region of Sudan, to protect the refugee camps there and prevent raids across the border by the Janjaweed militia.

Any major deployment to Darfur has great potential to be a complete disaster. The UN has allowed itself to be used by the Sudan Govt to play its Pan African Card. Its A LOAD OF CRAP . The UN is supposed to be one UN regardles of colour creed etc. THe current AU force there most of their time kipping in their compounds , a daily excursion mobile patrols and thats it. Night time when the gooks come into the IDP camps they are not around.. a brigade of good european troops would have made a much bigger impact. Plenty of officers with shiny uniforms and loads of saluting and such Bull.. When they first went there were US "contarctors" handling their logs, command and sigs etc. The AU is not even taken seriosuly by its own members about 50% only pay their dues.
Ireland has to be careful and very clear about what it can do or not do to defend itself and that is No 1 priority in such an operation.. And before hedge hogs starts shooting off, I have been there twice for a few weeks only in the last few years.Comment

I see Dermot Ahern wants some kind of assurances out of the Sudanese and the UN. Surely the only assurances are that the Sudanese don't give a toss about him and the UN have insufficient balls to deliver a sufficiently robust ROE?Comment
