  • Where after Chad?

Once the DF withdraw from Chad & Kosovo (and reduced in Bosnia), the DF will need somewhere to serve.

Ideally the Government will be looking at a "blue-helmet" mission as we don't have the money to do the likes of EU or NATO (UN-mandated) missions on a big scale.

    So where next?

The main possibility I think would include:

Lebanon, Liberia, Sudan, Congo & Darfur

Is it not a case of waiting for a request from the Security Council to take part in a mission that is about to begin. Have we ever joined a mission that was already underway???

If so is it not simply a case of shortlisting the places the UN are likely to ride into next

Yes but these are the countries with missions which are currently understrength.

Not sure actually with regard to the UN (with regard to UN-mandated, we weren't a founding nation of KFOR or IFOR).

Very short list.... how long did it take to get into Darfur?

It won't be anywhere near Afghanistan.. It will be somewhere where the UN are paying the costs..not us.

I can honestly see the Govt choosing to take a wee little break from large ops for atleast 3 or 4, and then when they realize how much that saves them they'll send c250 overseas at any one time, I doubt the Govt. would lose much sleep by not meeting its UN manning commitment

Haiti is only a couple of hundred troops under strength their are missions that are thousands (but it is in the news so....)!

                Cyprus looks like ending soon

Not sure about UNDOF as I can't find their authorised strength

I'm sure there will be a token mission in the interim. Of course the NBG continues, so at least the lads will get to leave the state occasionally.

                      Very few GF

Overseas service either makes or breaks a young lad

I know one young lad who went overseas a klutz and came back one of the best Soldiers we have

(not me I did the reverse)

Its like training in Templemore and then never leaving Store street cop shop

Wherever we end up, it'll have to be close. The way the countries financial stuation is, It'll need to be near a Ryanair route.
