From your post it seemed you had a Masters- sorry about that-

When you throw in the language allowance it exegarates and skews your figures

I havent a clue as to how many people are in receipt of this allowance

but in all my time I only knew 1 bloke in receipt of it- and he was a Sgt

Language allowance comes to 960 euro a year.

Maybe more people should be looking to qualify for it as Level 2.2.2.2 is functional not expert or professional.

Level 2.2.2.2 courses are usually 12-13 weeks duration of about 1-2 hours per day.

Having a higher leaving cert language would be a massive foundation to achieving proficiency

So one minute you're saying that members of the PDF are overpaid, both at home and overseas, and now you're saying that they should be drawing more random allowances?

Sure we are that well paid-

          why bother learning a language

instead each one of us should hire our own interpreter and bring him/her every where with us

well done- your indirect idea is a sure fire job creation winner.

the overseas allowance MAY seem big- but think about it-

As soon as you hit the ground your working until you leave the place-thats 24 hours a day for the entire trip-

Invaribaly your in some of the shittier places in Gods green earth

and your away from your family-

So I know you have experience of working away - when you were sailing, but its not like that
          at all-

Serving overseas isnt like going away with your mates on a session- its a different type of hardness (thats what she said)

What to see how they do against RPGs and IEDs in the field? I doubt we will see the DF in Afghanistan, it would be PR suicide by the government. Congo is a good possibility, Ivory Coast maybe? There's not a lot of UN Peacekeeping missions on the go at the moment, and if the mandate for MINURCAT goes, there is not a lot of choosing left.
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

We don't have the cash to go on a non-UN mission!

The DF have ruled out a battalion going to ISAF.

Deeply concerned by the outbreak of acts of piracy and armed robbery off the Somali coast, the European Union is conducting military operation EUNAVFOR Somalia (operation "Atalanta"), in support of UN Security Council Resolutions 1814 (2008), 1816 (2008), 1838 (2008), 1846 (2008) and 1897 (2009), in order to contribute to:

                          •the protection of vessels of the WFP (World Food Programme) delivering food aid to displaced persons in Somalia;
•the protection of vulnerable vessels cruising off the Somali coast, and the deterrence, prevention and repression of acts of piracy and armed robbery off the Somali coast.

Very easy to deploy a ship & MPA there at relatively low cost (in comparison to depoying a battalion overseas).

Wasn't there a story last week about the EU wanting to send troops to train the Somali Army?

                                get real!

you need more than a few RG-32's to perform combat operations in Afghan.

besides - you won't have the UN beret to protect you or the UN pay to sustain you!
