  • A very good interview detailing a first-hand account of an engagement in Lebanon in 1990 in which three Irish were badly injured and two armed individuals were killed in return fire.

    • If the US does use the veto as suggested by the article we may to evacuate rather quickly

      • Israel will be quick to fill the void the departure of UNIFIL will create.
(For "fill the void" see "Invade south Lebanon".)

The departure of UNIFIL is the last thing the people of Lebanon need right now. The question should be asked, why has the mandate failed, at which point the permanent members of the UNSC will need to take a very long look in the mirror.
The article frequently mentioned US tax dollars funding the "bloated force". Are the US up to date with their payments to the UN? For years Ireland was owed millions from the UN as a result of non payment by UNSC members.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

The article is written by the "Foundation for Defense of Democracies" which is a US based lobby group for Israel. It works mainly for the Israeli Ministry of Strategic Affairs.

That said many of the point raised do need to be addressed.

It’s always worth following the money...

                • The path being taken by the US on this and the sanctions on Iran are destroying the UNSC.
If the mandate is not renewed will the EU send a Peacekeeping force maybe with some other nations like India?
The area is dominated by Hezbollah and that is a major issue. If the UN pulls out they will likely get support from Syria/Russia. Where the West leaves the latter steps in.

                    • Given the Triple-Lock, if the UN pulls out, that (presumably) will be the end of Ireland’s involvement in South Lebanon?

At which point any pretence of neutrality in our foreign policy is exposed for being the sham it is.
Even our contribution to KFOR was very limp wristed and tokenism even though it was happening on the ACTUAL borders of Europe, a few miles where most Irish people went on their summer holidays.
It's grant though, Lebanon is far away. When it as a state inevitably collapses it's citizens won't end up here.... And Ireland having spent the last 40 years involved in protecting it's citizens and supporting the status quo will have a clear concience when the same people become the latest victims of Israeli/Syrian imperialism.

UNTSO has a separate mandate and has a presence in Lebanon (plus Israel, Syria and Egypt). That is an unarmed observer mission With a small number of officers.

No mandate = no UNIFIL = no mission and complete withdrawal of UN from Lebanon (with exception of OGL part of UNIFIL)

Love to know how that will help stop Hezbollah

so you think Ireland alone should have the capability to unilaterally enter another State without permission ?

A Tpt Coy followed by an Inf Gp with KFOR “limp wristed and tokenism”?
I’ve met a few people who were the on St.Patricks Day 2004 who would disagree. The Irish stepped up when others didn’t

First and foremost if there is a response it is likely to be an EU one led by France and Italy. Finally the BGs get deployed!

So that would be the dilemma for Ireland; the EU takes over a former UN mission which we have supported for 40 years (and if the mandate was renewed would still support) but because of a "hissy fit" by one of the veto powers we are no longer there!
