"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has visited Irish troops in the Golan Heights today where they are engaged in UN peacekeeping duties.
Mr Kenny said peacekeeping was at the centre of Irish foreign policy.
There are 131 members of the Irish Defence Forces in the Golan Heights where they monitor a ceasefire line, a task that has become much more challenging in recent years due to the Syrian civil war.
The area of separation between Israel and Syria is over 75km long and varies in width between 10km and 200 metres.
The current group arrived in September and is the the fifth Irish contingent to deploy with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force since 2013.
The forces also provide armed protection for UNDOF personnel and support observation posts on the line of separation.
Yesterday, Mr Kenny, who is being accompanied by the Minister for Defence Simon Coveney and Minister of State Paul Kehoe, visited the 51st Infantry Group deployed to south Lebanon.
He thanked them for their work in monitoring the blue line between Israel and Lebanon and their efforts in ensuring humanitarian access to the people living there.
A small but violent off-shoot of the Islamic State has taken root just north of the Israeli-Syrian border and may be planning to carry out large-scale terror attacks against Israel, the IDF warned on Wednesday.
The group, Shuhda al-Yarmouk, which the army believes is comprised of approximately 600 fighters, has taken up a position approximately 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) away from Israel within the Syrian Golan Heights.
Despite the terror organization’s relatively small size, the Islamic State-affiliated group possesses vast stores of weapons and poses a legitimate threat to Israel, a high ranking army officer told journalists on Wednesday.
. Irish Army medic saves the life of a young woman bitten by deadly snake
Published 03/05/2016 | 10:44
An Irish army medic has been hailed a hero after she saved the life of a young woman bitten by a snake in Syria.
Corporal Paula Burcheal (28) came to the rescue after the local lady was attacked by the highly venomous Palestinian Viper.
The soldier, from Clane in Co Kildare, administered anti-venom medicine using a needle and the victim had a dramatic recovery.
In a post on Facebook the Defence Forces said the incident happened on Sunday, April 24 in the Golan Heights.
They added:”This time last week, as most of us were sitting down to our Sunday dinner Corporal Paula Burcheal, a medic with the 52 Infantry Group, was treating a lady that had been bitten by a Palestinian Viper.
“The snake, which is found throughout the Golan Heights, is a regular visitor to the positions occupied by Irish troops and its bite, if left untreated, can kill.
“Cpl Burcheal, who was deployed to render aid as part of the UNDOF mission's Quick Reaction Force administered anti-venom intravenously thereby saving the woman's life.”
Cpl Burcheal is in the region as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).
A total of 130 Irish men and women are currently stationed in the Golan Heights.
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night. http://www.salamanderoasis.org/poems...nnis/luck.html
Mod,
Clearly someone has missed the memo of uninformative one word posts, gentle warning time....

first group of 127 UN peacekeepers returned Monday to a camp on the Syrian-held side of the Golan Heights, two years after withdrawing amid clashes with Al-Qaeda-linked Syrian rebels.
“The situation in the area is dramatically different from what it was prior to 2014 and the mission’s concept of operations has been adjusted accordingly,” said Haq.
“But we are going to incrementally return back.”
Does this mean that Assad has control over this area ? Hadn't noticed !
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
