If the DF wanted to go back to a Inf Bn overseas (IMHO they should - cheaper (less rotations), wider spread of appointments (especially for other ranks) etc), they would have pull all Inf Gp's (UNIFIL and UNDOF) and probably stop EUBG commitments, if for no other reason that they don't have enough APCs.

An interview with a recently returned ARW officer suggested that the MINUSMA mission would be ideal for the DF.
If I'm not mistaken, strength has been on a sliding scale every year for the last decade.
It'll be a long, long time before we see another 1000 troops in uniform.
What is possible is doing a force protection job with a Coy sized contingent. Would reduce the need to bring in armour etc, assuming it is provided by other nations.

We are a million miles off being able to deploy in an expeditionary role at present which is very unfortunate as it is what we need to retain and attract people.

There won't be a drawdown of UNIFIL anyway imo. It's ideal in terms of being "not too hot, not too cold", the "new Leb" anyway.
UNDOF would have to be the sacrificial lamb.
Do we even have enough armour to sustain a BN and two Coy sized contingents at the same time?
You may be right regarding operational benefit, but the DF are at the beck and call of politicians and optics is the name of the game.
A soldier doing long range recce is the same as a soldier standing at a swinging gate in the eyes of a politician.
Gotta show that we are doing something with that security council seat.

From my sketchy memory, there was a time when we could provide APC and mobile fire support by way of M3 and AML 90, as part of the FMR in UNIFIL. The Bn overseas also had its own HQ staff, and deployed the 120 mortar and other heavy support weapons. Meanwhile, at home we had three infantry battalions on the border, all with APC, and there was still enough APC, in each command for training and operations locally.
How could we do it then? For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

I will assume it is and assume the DF strength for the period you refer to is vastly superior to what it is now.

Impossible to answer really without an in-depth look at the CS4 at that point versus now.
I can only speculate that the requirement, self imposed or otherwise, for specialists overseas is a lot greater now than it was back when the DF were doing border ops.
