    Because we only have one major overseas mission, the Liberia / Sierra Leone one. The rest is made up of observers / consultants etc. Except Kosovo but thats not really major is it?
    It is only by contemplation of the incompetent that we can appreciate the difficulties and accomplishments of the competent.

      I think the government are not really 100% happy with promoting the KFOR mission as its not a UN one....UN is cuddly and friendly(in their eyes) KFOR on the other hand has claws.(and has achieved its mandate where the UN failed)
      It reminds them that they signed up to this EURRF battlegroup thingy, and they have to work as a real army.

      Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

        UN mission also means that the UN pay lock stock and barrel the govt for the troops and the depreciation of the equipment

        all other missions the govt takes the tab
        Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
        Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
        The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
        The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
        The best lack all conviction, while the worst
        Are full of passionate intensity.

          Yes but what are they there to do? What are the appointments? What do the Men do on a day to day basis?
          WARNING: Consumption of alcohol may lead you to believe that ex-lovers are really dying for you to ring them at 4am!!

                According to http://www.un.int/ireland/peacekeeping.htm there are 20 gardai serving in Cyprus.(UNPOL)

                The Garda Síochána (the police force) first participated in UN peacekeeping in 1989, when a 48 -strong contingent was sent to Namibia with the UN Transitional Assistance Group (UNTAG). Since then, approximately 400 members of the Garda Síochána have served with various UN missions throughout the world. 20 Gardaí currently on service with the UN are serving in Cyprus
                There are however other gardai on secondment to Europol who would not appear as being overseas, even though they are.
