IMHO it's not the RDF who need to improve their fitness, it's the PDF.

some of the Privates seem very old indeed, are they all passing their annual fitness tests?

i know there are some exceptionally fit lads in the PDF (and the RDF) but i think the RDF lads are more motivated than a lot of PDF lads i have seen.

that's just my ten pence worth.

I think the age profile situation has already been mentioned. And older personnel have different fitness requirements then the younger folks. Also the older Pte's are less inclined to go oversea's.

But as has been said, those individuals are being phased out.

I for one think that a good start for the RDF would be to at least not recruit people who are obviously unfit. (i.e. People who weigh half a ton and struggle to breath when climbing a stairs. You know the type!)

(i put numbers by your sentences for clarity murph)

        1. why would the older Privates be less likely to go overseas? Privates are Privates.

        2. are they being phased out, is there a process in place?

        3. i agree - there should be a standard fitness / entry test for the RDF.

What exactly are you basing this opinion on? Surely unless you have seen the fitness tests results for the entire army you are doing nothing more than taking a wild guess on what its fitness profile is like?

            1. From what i understand they perform tasks at home in support of the cadre while the younger Pte's do all the physically demanding roles.

            2. Those people in question joined when they had the old contracts, which is why they are still in being that old. Under the new contracts you must be promoted every certain number of years in order to remain in the DF. I think it's a maximum of 21 years?? I might need to be corrected here.

            3. Exactly, doesn't have to be something too harsh. Just to weed out the people who wouldn't even be capable of being a goalie in a game of soccer.

like i said - my key words were 'in my honest opinion...', 'they seem to be...' and 'i think...'.

all based on what i have seen and encountered. remember, i was once a member of the former RDF myself and worked closely with PDF, and anytime i return back to Ireland and see soldiers on Prisoner Escort or CIT duties - they don't exactly look the most athletic of men in general.

A good start would be to pass the same entry test as the PDF. Hardly strenuous.

Compare a PDF 3 Star fresh out of training to a RDF 3 Star that has just passed out.

You'll see a big difference in fitness.

The old Privates will be gone soon enough, thankfully. As for people being motivated etc. there's plenty of RDF people knocking about that certainly aren't "motivated".

There's bags of shite in both organisations, such is life.

I could say that for British NCO's and Officers I've served with overseas..Infact in my 6 month tour and saw two rotations the only guy from the British contingent who trained regularly was their CO.. None of the Sgt's went out for a run either did the rest of the officers..and before you ask the Welsh Guards.

Thats endemic in all Armies not just the PDF.

That guy badly needs a boot in the bollocks - as Hello Alaska said, it's
a DF gym, not a PDF gym

I started using the facilities in DFPES late in 2008, as they are closer to my
                      home

When I initially went up to enquire, I introduced myself to 2 of the DFPES
staff (one of whom has featured on a recent TV program ) and asked was
it possible for RDF personnel to use the facility

The answer was "Can you prove you are in the RDF ? "

To which I produced my RDFRA card and said " Is that OK ? "

To which they said, " Fine, work away there - use the pool too, if you want to "
(unfortunately, I can' t swim, something which the long haired general keeps
                      nagging me about remedying)

I' ve taken part in a few of the lunchtime Circuit Training sessions since aswell
(and just about came out alive !)

In short - they couldn't have been more helpful

As a result, the then paunch was subsided to a gentle swell, and I now run more
than I did in my 20's (I' m now just about the good side of 40)
